"All in the United States and England bearing the name of GRIDLEY are
descendants of Albertus GRESLET who entered England from Normandy with the army
of William the Conqueror and was present at the Battle of Hastings which took
place in 1066. Ralph de GRESLI, a son of albertus, took up arms against King
Henry, 111, 1207-1272. Robert de GRIEDLY was one of the barons who took up
arms against King John and witnessed the confirmation of the Magna Carta in
Westminister in 1225. Thomas de GRIEDLY, son of Robert, did military service
in Gascony in 1243 and against Scotts in 1244 and with the Army of Wales in
1260. Thomas de GREDLEY, grandson of Thomas, performed military service
against the Scotts in 1299 and 1300 and against Robert BRUCE and the Scotts in
1308-10. He was granted a charter, dated May 14, 1301, to Manchester,
constituting it as a free Burrough, which is to be found in the archives of the
Manchester Corporation. Richard and Thomas GRIDLEY, lineal descendants of
Thomas de GREDLEY, emmigrated from Essex, England, in 1630-1 and settled in
Boston, Mass. Thomas GRIDLEY, the American ancestor of Capt. Charles V.
GRIDLEY killed in the battle before Manila, was a member of the flock of Thomas
HOOKER, who came from England and settled in Hartford, CT, in 1632. He was a
member of john MASON's Company in the fight against the PEQUOTS in the war of
1636-7. Richard GRIDLEY, about 1650, became Captain of the Ancient and
Honorable Artillery Company. Richard, the son of Richard, was born in Boston.
He was Captain of Artillery at the seige of Louisburg, Cape Briton Island,
1745. Later, when trouble with the mother country seemed inevitable, on being
asked on which side he would fight, replied, "I shall fight for my country and
justice". However when war broke out he cast his lot with the Colonists and
was appointed to command of the artillery. The only artillery in the province
at that time. Now a Colonel he laid out the fortifications at Breeds Hill,
June 16, 1776 and was at the battle there the following day. On the 20th of
September he received from the Provincial Congress the rank of Major General.
The battle roll of the war contains the names of many GRIDLEYS of whom little
or nothing is known or ever will be known."
