MRS. OPAL STRATTON HONORED FOR 73 YEARS OF CHURCH MEMBERSHIP
Gilead Baptist church in Hettick held a special recognition service Sunday morning for Mrs. Opal Stratton who was baptized into membership May 16, 1909. Her son, and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Olin Stratton of Highland attended the service with Mrs. Stratton.
A corsage was presented to Mrs. Stratton by Mrs. Naomi Armstrong. The church presented her with a sweetheart rosebush for her splendid achiement.
Mrs. Stratton taught primary and junior classes in the Sunday school for a number of years. Numerous other members were honored for 40 to 60 years of continuous membership in the church. Each was presented a carnation. Those who have 60 years are Mrs. Marie Wheeler and Mrs. Bessie Stults, both of Hettick and Mrs. Elizabeth Bramley of Friendship home in Carlinville, Mrs Frances Tate and Mrs. Lois Austwick, 59 years; Mrs. Naomi Armstrong, 50 years; Joe Crum, 45 years; Richard, Ralph and David Taylor, Margaret Arnett, Mrs. Ethel Cooksey, Mrs. Frances Corder and Leslie Cooksey, each have 40 years of membership.
The special service included several hymns of the earlier era and special music by Mrs. Carol Stewart.

Mrs. Opal Stratton, 91, was recognized Sunday at Gilead Baptist Church for 75 years as a member of the church. The guest speaker was Robert J. Hastings of Springfield. Her son Olin Stratton and his son John of Highland and her granddaughter, Mrs. Candy Keip of Mt. Zion were all present for the occasion. Olin, John and Candy were dinner guests of Mrs. Stratton. She received several nice gifts.

BESSIE OPAL STRATTON, 97, longtime resident of Hettick, IL passed away at the Hampton Nursing Home in Alhambra, Nov. 25, 1989.
Opal Stratton was born July 11, 1892. She was the daughter of Jonathan and Irettie Stewart of near Hettick. Preceding her in death was a daughter Ivarene Schelp of New Berlin and a brother Ernest Stewart of Mechanicsburg. Opal is survived by one sister, Marie Converse of Springfield and one son Olin Stratton of Highland, and three grandchildren, Candace Baker of Mt. Zion, Jeff Stratton of Highland, John Stratton of St. Louis and great grandson Barton William Keip of Mt. Zion.
Opal Stratton was an 80 years member of the Gilead Baptist Church of Hettick. Funeral Sevices will be at the Gilead Baptist Church in Hettick and interment in the Baptist Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra, IL.

Hettick - Bessie Opal Stratton, 97, of Hettick, died at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Hampton Nursing Home in Alhambra.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Gilead Baptist Church in Hettick. Burial will be in Gilead Baptist Cemetery.
Stults-Neece Funeral Home, Palmyra, is in charge of arrangements.
Sruviving are one son, Olin of Highland; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Marie Converse of Springfield.
