John Reuben Stewart volunteered for Military Service, Civil War, 10 March 1864 in Palmyra, Macoupin Co., IL. He was mustered in at Camp Butler, Springfield, IL 10 March 1864. Family history states that he contracted smallpox while at Camp Butler, although there is no military record. Small pox affected his sight to some degree. He was officially discharge 15 August 1865 at Benton Barrack, St. Louis, Mo. His original discharge papers are in the possession of ggrandaughter, Mary Ann Stewart Kaylor.

CIVIL WAR RECORDS from Washington show the following:

VOLUNTEER ENLISTMENT, State of Illinois, Town of Palmyra.
I, John Stewart, born in Morgan Co. in the State of Illinois aged 28 years, and by occupation a farmer, Do Hereby Acknowlege to have volunteered this 10th day of March 1864 to serve as a soldier in the Army of the United States for the period of three years, unless sooner discharged by proper authority. Do also agree to accept such bounty, pay, rations, and clothing, as are, or may be established by law for volunteers. And I, John Stewart, do solemnly swear that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the United States of America, and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whomsoever; and that I will observe and obey the orders of the President of the United States, and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the Rule and Articles of War.

Sworn and subscribed to, at Palmyra this 10th day of March 1864,

I, certify on honor, that I have carefuly examned the above -names Volunteer, agreeably to the General Regulations fo the Army, and that, in my opinion, he is free from all bodily defects and mental
infirmity, which would in any way disqualify him from performing the duties of a solder.

I, certify on honor, that I have minutely inspected the Volunteer, John Stewart, previously to his enlistment, and that he was entirely sober when enlisted; that, to the best of my judgement and belief, he is of lawful age; and that, in accepting him as duly qualified to perform the duties of an able-bodied soldier, I have strictly observed the Regulations which govern the recruiting service. This soldier had Blue eyes, Light hair, fair complexion, is 5 feet 4 inches high.
