1884 in Vermillion Co., IN. She married (1) JOHN TEDROW 1811. He was born Abt. 1790 in PA/OH??, and died
Abt. 1812 in Ft. Sackville, nr Vincennes, IN. She married (2) DANIEL HELT2,3 17 June 1819 in Vigo Co., IN, son
of JOHN HELT and CATHERINE ??. He was born 22 October 1791 in Washington Co., PA, and died
25 March 1879 in Vermillion Co., IN.
Notes for MARY MAGDALENA ELY:
MARY is mentioned in her father's Will in 1830 in Washington Co., PA. Not listed with a married name as her
sister's were??? She would have been married to Daniel HELT at this time??
Parke & Vermillion Cos. IN History refers to her as "POLLY TEEHOM", but this researcher believes this is
MARY ELY who married JOHN TEDROW #1. Marriagerecord in Vigo Co., IN substantiates this, as her name
is listed as DETRO which is a variant of TEDROW. Polly is frequently used as a nickname for Mary, plus the
surname TEDROW has been misspelled so many ways that I believe TEEHOM Could be misread as TEDROW in
earlier writings. What has yet to be researched is "seven children" before marrying Daniel Helt. I know of only
two and she doesn't appear old enough to have had seven children before she m Daniel Helt, re the Census
readings and tombstone inscriptions. She was b 1794 and was 25 in 1819 when she m#2. To have had 7 children
she would have been married at age 17 or 18 and had a child each year?? Possible, but seems impractical to think
that?? Unless there were mulitply births, such as sets of twins? Her first husband, JOHN TEDROW became
sick after a hunting trip near Vincennes IN and died there. --These thoughts written by researcher Nov 1997.
_____________
Information on Mary Ely Tedrow Helt came from marriagerecord; A Descendant of HELT's in Vermillion Co IN;
Vermilion Co IN History biography; Marilyn Ellis by e-mail where she searched the Ancestor File at Family
History Center and also has the ELY surname as a Collateral relative. Birth years of children are from this
Ancestoral File.
_____________________
Email from Bill Phillips informing me of info on the Washington Co., PA Web Page on the
George EALY family that listed dau Mary's first husband as JOHN TEDROW with a marriage year of 1811.
Raymond Bell, a very well respected researcher for Washington Co., PA was a researcher of the EALY surname.
Bill Phillips ancestor was a brother to George EALY, Michael ELY?
_______________
Land Patent in Vincennes land office for a JONAS TEDROW who purchased land in 1837 and 1840 in Vermillion
Co. IN. Could this be a son of Mary? Or is it JOHN TEDROW, son of Mary?
Notes for JOHN TEDROW:
Re Leonard Helt of Clinton, Vermillion Co., IN: "Apparently, when the HELT family had relocated from Ohio and
had stayed the winter at Fort Sackville, Vincennes, IN, they also stayed with the TEDROW family at Fort Sackville.
MARY TEDROW'S husband had been hunting for furs, had beCome ill and was left at Fort Sackville. When
DANIEL HELT returned to Fort Sackville in the Spring, he disCovered that MR. TEDROW had died.
MARY TEDROW supposedly had two children by her first husband before marrying DANIEL HELT."
(m Daniel Helt in 1819)
Per Parke & Vermillion Co., IN History, Daniel Helt m POLLY TEEHOM, but this researcher believes this is the
same person as MARY TEDROW. This history states that she had seven children by first marrigae to ?
TEDROW.
Notes for DANIEL HELT:
Re LEO HELT, Clinton, IN: "The township north of here (Clinton) is HELT township, which was named after
DANIEL HELT. The family who settled here Consisted of JOHN and CATHERINE HELT, and their (4) four
children, ELIZABETH HELT FORD; DANIEL, MICHAEL and GEORGE. The HELT family had lived in Ohio,
and DANIEL HELT and MICHAEL HELT fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1822, abut 75 miles north of here.
They noticed the prairie land was good farmland and, after fighting in the War of 1812 in OH, they receive a
bounty land for their military service. The families came down the Scioto and Ohio Rivers and up the Wabash
River. They supposedly built three cabins at Summit Grove, IN, about 1814, spent the winter at Fort Sackville,
Vincennes, IN and settled in the cabins about 1816. This area is now known as Helt's Prairie and there also is
Helt's Prairie Cemetery where most of the early settlers are buried."
DANIEL and MICHAEL HELT fought in the battle of Tippecanoe in 1811, 75 miles north of Clinton, IN. They also
fought in the War of 1812 from Ohio and received bounty land in IN and chose the area of Wabash River in Vermillion
Co IN, as they had been there during their war year.
Len Helt is the son of HOWARD HELT and grandson of IRVIN HELT. IRVIN HELT is the ggrandson of DANIEL
HELT.
HISTORY OF VERMILLION Co IN 1888: DANIEL HELT, one of the earliest settlers of Helt township, was born
in Washington Co PA 22 Oct 1791, a son of JOHN HELT. In 1815 Daniel Helt acCompanied his father to
Vincennes, Indiana, and in the fall of 1817 they came to Vermillion County and built a cabin and in the spring of
1818 moved the family into it. The Country at that time was inhabited by Indians and wild animals and they had
many thrilling adventures, which Mr. Helt never tired of relating and many are remembered by his family. The
Indians were in the habit of Coming to the houses of the white settlers for provisions and at one time when the
larder was nearly empty Mr. Helt refused to give them anything. At this they became angry and came to his
house with the intentions of killing him, but he was absent from home and thus avoided a quarrel. At one time
an Indian went to the house of his father, JOHN HELT, and demanded either his gun or his papoose (his son
George), but Mr. Helt told him he Could have neither, but if he did not leave he would gladly give him the
Contents of the gun. Mr. Helt was a veteran of the war of 1812, and had no fear of the Indians. They were
obliged to go to Vincennes to mill, and were some times three or four weeks in making the trip. Mr. Helt was
married 17 June 1819 to MARY M. ELY, daughter of GEORGE ELY. To them were born nine children, five of
whom are living---FRANCIS M.; HENRY E.; PHOEBE (now Mrs. JACoB MILLER); CATHERINE (now Mrs. WM.
HAMMON); and MARY J. (wife of D. E. STRAIN). A daughter LUCINDA died at the age of two years, and two
sons, GEORGE and ELI, after they had reached manhood. Eli left a wife and four children. Mr. Helt died March
15, 1879, in the eighty-eighth year of his age, and Mrs. Helt September 30, 1884, in her ninety-first year. They
were members of the Methodist EpisCopal church.
