Bobbitt, Isham
"It becomes my painful duty, by the request of
the bereaved, to write the obituary of my father-in-
law, Deacon Isham Bobbitt, who died the 14th of the
present month. Father Bobbitt was a brother of the
late Elder John Bobbitt, whose obituary you published
a few years ago in the Signs of the Times, was born in
South Carolina, May 22, 1792, and was consequently
seventy years and six months of age, lacking eight
days. He was baptized in Kentucky by Elder John
Wilson in December 1829, and emigrated to Illinois in
March 1834, and united with Middle Creek Church in
Hancock County, December 1834, at that time under the
pastoral care of Elder William Bradley. He was
ordained a deacon in April 1836. I have been
intimately acquainted with him for twenty-three years,
and can say that he was a firm advocate of salvation
by grace alone; a finished salvation was his theme.
He was one of those quiet, unobtrusive kind of men
that are not properly appreciated by many until they
are taken from us. In his death, his family has lost
a kind and affectionate husband and parent, the
community a quiet and inoffensive and obliging
neighbor, and the church a faithful and attentive
member whose worldly affairs, so far as he could
control them, nor any other thing but providential
hindrance kept him from his seat at church. He
suffered a great deal during his last illness, which
was a paralytic stroke, combined with pulmonary
disease, but seemed to be perfectly resigned to the
will of his Master, though anxious to depart. He made
no complaint at his sufferings. The last two weeks he
was utterly speechless, but we could learn by signs
that death had lost his terror to him, and he finally
fell asleep in Jesus without a struggle or a groan.
Yours in hope of eternal life, Robert F. Haynes,
November 22, 1862."

ISHAM DRURY BOBBITT 1790 - 1865
Son of Isham and Elizabeth Bobbitt

Isham Drury Bobbitt was the last child and son of Isham and Elizabeth (James) Bobbitt. He was named after his father and an uncle, named Drury Bobbitt. His grandfather was John Richard Bobbitt of Warren County, North Carolina.

Isham Drury Bobbitt was born in 1790 in Spartanburg County District 96, South Carolina. When he was 13 years of age he moved with the family to Christian County, Kentucky.

On December 18, 1824, Isham Drury Bobbitt married Cynthia Ann Haggard in Trigg County, Kentucky. They were married by John W. Bobbitt, a minister of the Gospel, and an older brother of the groom. Cynthia Ann Haggard was a daughter of David and Nancy (Dawson) Haggard of Albemarle County, Virginia. David Haggard was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. The family of Isham and Cynthia was listed two times in the 1830 census. Once in Trigg County, Kentucky where we believe that Cynthia had gone to care for a grandfather who was over 100 years of age. They were also listed in the census of Christian County, Kentucky and this record better represents the entire family.

Isham Bobbitt:
1 male under 5 (1825-1830) 1 female under 5 (1825- 1830)
1 male 30 - 40 (1790-1800) 1 female 20 - 30 (1800-1810)

This record from Christian County shows Isham, Cynthia, their first son, William Bobbitt, and their daughter Teressa. Living next to the family was the family of John W. Bobbitt.

Shortly after the 1830 census was taken, Isham and his family moved to Clark County, Kentucky near a village called Winchester. Cynthia's relatives lived in the area, including her father and mother. Their second son, John William Bobbitt was born in Winchester in 1834. By 1834 the family had moved to Hancock County, Illinois, and were counted in the 1840 census of that county.

Isham Bobbitt:
1 male under 5 (1835-1840) 1 female under 5 (1835-1840)
1 male 5 10 (1830-1835)
1 female 10 - 15 (1825-1830)
1 male 40 50 (1790-1800)
1 female 30 - 40 (1800-1810)
This census shows the entire family with the exception of David Frank Bobbitt who was born in June 1840, apparently after this census was taken. In 1850 the family was living in Tazewell County Illinois. Teressa Bobbitt married Robert F. Haynes on. November 24, 1841 in Hancock County, and was not counted with the family in the 1850 census. William was away from home.

Isham Bobbitt wrote a will which was recorded in Putnam County in Book F, page 91. The will was probated in March of 1865 and the probate was recorded in Book 1, page 344, as Order No. 275.

Third: It is my will that my children shall each be charged uppon this my last will with the amount that I have heretofore bestowed upon them severally, and what they may otherwise be owing to me, and their obligations be delivered to them upon their giving their receipts for the amount to my executors, hereinafter appointed.

Fourth: it is my will that after the marriage or decease of my wife, that what may be left and remaining shall be so divided that each of my children with what they have already received shall share equally. I hereby appoint my son-in-law Robert F. Haynes and my son, William W. Bobbitt, executors.

Notes:
From The Bobbitt Family of America by John W. Bobbitt, 1985:

We are indebted to Mrs. Lois (Barney) Merideth, a descendant of Isham and Cynthia Bobbitt for preserving the published obituary of Cynthia Ann Bobbitt. The obituary was written in 1885 and is copied here as the original is too fragile to have it photographed.
Died, At the home of her son, Frank Bobbitt in Kansas City, Missouri, on Thursday, February 25, 1885, in the 77th year of her age, Mrs. Cynthia A. Bobbitt.

The subject of the above notice was born near Winchester, Kentucky and her maiden name was Haggard. She was married at the age of fifteen to Isham Bobbitt, who died about twenty years ago. They moved to Illinois in 1834, where she lived until she came west about four years ago. She was an honored member and a consistent member of the Baptist church for sixty years. She was the mother of five children, three sons, who are still living, and two daughters who are dead. The remains were brought to this city and according to her request, the funeral was preached at the residence of her son, John W. Bobbitt, three miles northeast of Virdon, on Saturday last by.... and was buried in the Liberty Cemetery. On account of some mistake, the telegram sent to Mr. J. W. Bobbitt did not reach him, and he was not aware of the sad news, until his brother arrived with the body.

The obituary tells much of the history of this family and was the basis for much of our research. Both Teressa and Malissa died in 1868 in Illinois.

The last record of Cynthia in a federal census was taken in Richardson County, Nebraska, Liberty Precinct, living with her son David Frank Bobbitt.
