OTHER INFORMATION

Washington County was the first county to be formed in the state of Ohio. It is named for George Washington and formed by Governor Arthur St. Clair.

The city of Marietta is the present county seat. It was named after Marie Antoinette and is situated on the site of important prehistoric earth works. Marietta stands on the site of "Campus Martius", a stockade built by the Ohio Company.

Industries in Washington County are; metals, chemicals, stone-clay-glass, food, machinery, lumber, ferroalloys, plastices, aluminum foil, dyes, drug compounds, dairy products, cattle and calves.

Probate Judge has birth & death records from 1867, marriage & probate records from 1789; Clerk of Courts has divorce & civil court records from 1795; County Recorder has land records.
