OTHER INFORMATION

Guernsey County takes its name from the Island of Gurnsey in the English Channel, from which the early settlers came. The county is marked by strip-mining operations.

Cambridge, the county seat, was laid out in 1806. After the National Road reached it in 1828, the city grew and was known for its glass industry. It is an important dairy, livestock and shopping center in the heart of the Muskingum Conservancy Lake District watershed.

The principle industries include; machinery, stone-clay-glass, rubber, wall tile, vanadium steel alloys, fractional horsepower motors, communications equipment, stainless steel utensils, spark plug insulators.

Probate Court has birth, marriage & probate records; Clerk of Courts has divorce records from 1850 & civil court records from 1810; County Health Department has death records.
