OTHER INFORMATION

Defiance County was formed in 1845, the name coming from Fort Defiance. The county seat is also named Defiance.

The city of Defiance was laid out in 1822 on the site of a large Indian settlement and became a busy trade center. The citizens were said to have "defied" the early Indians. The arrival of a canal later increased the town's growth. It is the home of Defiance College, a coeducational institution that grew out of the Defiance Femal Seminary.

Soybeans are the agricultural crop. Metals, machinery, stone-clay-glass, ordnance, food, transportation equipment, gray iron castings, radio condensers, fiberglass insulation, automotive mufflers, hand tools, meat, dairy and bakery are all part of the main industries.

Probate Court has birth & marriage records from 1845; Clerk of Courts has divorce & civil court records from 1845; General Health District has death and burial records.

Information from Cecily G. (Roszell) Steele
June 28, 1999

I have had some very excellent help from a Records Clerk in the Defiance County Records Center in Defiance, Ohio. Her name is Corrine Duerk and when I ask for some information from her she not only sends that information, but sends additional information that she thinks I might like and/or need (I asked for the birth record on Ola E. Steele and she sent me the names and birth dates on all children she could find by the last name of Steele in that county for a 10 year period, giving us names of siblings of his we didn't even know about). She works at keeping the costs down and informed me that the costs for photo copies are $1.00, uncertified copies $2.00, certified copies $3.00. She is great at research and is very friendly. She's doing genealogy research of her own so understands the kinds of things we need.

Any way to make a long story short, she is very willing to help on genealogy projects and very good at it.
