Batavia, Clermont Co., Ohio
From: Dottie L Miller
Subject: Preservation of Old Books
"I read the following letter and had to finally write. I was going to
someday, but we all know how that day gets put off. This is long but I feel important to your county. I came to Batavia, Clermont Co. , Ohio last July from Oregon.
I found the people there every helpful & polite. The town was very small and quaint, just like my downtown area of Gresham . While walking out side
the courthouse, carrying my Genealogical Forum of Oregon bag, a nice
man (looked like a lawyer) asked if I was doing genealogy. I said "yes"
He said " well, don't go in the courthouse, Go around the side of the
courthouse and you will find a door with no writing on it. Go in and
tell them you would like to see the old books in the basement. The
ladies there had no idea what was down there, It was only storage to
them. They had no idea what genealogy was either :-) WELL, I was
delighted & overwhelmed.
I was looking for an old probate record, but what I found was Tax; Mortgage; Land; Probate and many more records. I'm allergic to dust ,so could only stay about 2 hours before I could no longer breathe. I carried those big books up & down stairs to make copies. I even left alot of dust on the copy machine. I only wish I had a camera like the one they talk about. Please read I go to that basement and save that information!"
The basement full of info needs to be saved and cataloged.
