Athens County, formed in 1805, takes its name from Athens, Greece. The land was dedicated for educational purposes and ancient Athens was a center of learning.
The county is the home of Ohio University, founded in 1802. The school began in two rooms with three students. One of the university's early presidents was William Holmes McGuffey, author of the McGuffey Readers for children.
The city of Athens, which is the county seat, developed around the university.
Principle industries include; printing and publishing, non-electrical machinery, leather, food, office machines, automotive tire molds, hand tools, custom printed business forms and dairy products.
