About the USGenWeb E-Zine
AUDIENCE: The USGenWeb E-zine
is a quarterly web-zine primarily intended for the County and State
Coordinators of the USGenWeb project.
Beyond this primary audience, the USGenWeb E-zine also contains a fair
amount of information of interest and value to all kinds of people.
PURPOSE: To promote grassroots communication and unification of
the County Coordinators and State Coordinators of the USGenWeb Project.
LIMITS: There are some things that you won't see much of in the
USGenWeb E-zine. You won't see editorials or discussions on political
topics. There are plenty of forums for those topics. There's no need to
cover that ground here.
SCHEDULE: The USGenWeb E-zine is published once each quarter.
It will generally include a selection of these departments:
- Editorial Musings and observations by one of the editors.
- County spotlight This column will spotlight a county with
exciting special projects, or a lot of hard work!
- Letter from the Editor An update on how this E-zine project
is going
- Reader Mail Excerpts from recent e-mail from USGenWeb E-zine
readers
- Another Voice Occasionally, when someone suitable wants to
volunteer, we'll run a special feature article or commentary by a guest
author.
- Scheduled Events
- Resources Support systems available for USGenWeb Volunteers
Remember: Since the USGenWeb E-zine is brand new, and
since it's an all-volunteer project, the format and design of each issue
often will vary. Thanks for being understanding about these
inconsistencies.
Be sure to tell us about what you do and don't like to see here.
Without feedback from our readers, we're just shooting in the dark!
Officially, we much prefer "A USGenWeb Project Community of
Volunteers".
MOTIVE: Why does the USGenWeb E-zine exist?
- DESPERATION: Amazingly, this is probably the most driving
force behind this newsletter. Morale seems to be at an all time low, and
places for new (and existing) volunteers to discuss simple site content
and design ideas seem to be at a minimum.
- COMMUNITY: Most of the USGenWeb Volunteers are some of the
most generous people I know. This newsletter offers a forum for sharing
that generosity. The USGenWeb E-zine is a nexus for the growing
community of USGenWeb volunteers and others who are concerned about the
quality and direction of the USGenWeb Project.
VOLUNTEERING: Want to help with the USGenWeb E-zine?
Like all USGenWeb Projects, the E-zine has no budget. We are unable to
pay cash for anyone's contributions, no matter how valuable they may be.
That said, many people have indicated that they would like to volunteer
with this project. That's great and much appreciated! Here's a list of
where we could use some help.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If any of these categories interests you, it's
crucial that you to contact the editor to discuss your ideas before you
start working. This publication has a very specific focus, and many of the
ideas that we receive either need work or are not appropriate for the
USGenWeb E-zine.
- Writing. If you would like to write about a topic that is
appropriate for USGenWeb E-zine, and if you are reasonably knowledgeable
about that topic, you could contribute an editorial, article, or review.
(No longer than 2,000 words, if possible.)
- Editing. If you are an experienced editor, we could use
another pair of eyes looking over our articles before publication. This
could involve anything from simple proofreading to in-depth "slicing and
dicing." Volunteer editors should be familiar with the style, tone, and
focus of the USGenWeb E-zine.
Aside from those categories, the USGenWeb E-zine is
always looking for advice, observations, and information from readers. We
don't always have the time and resources to act on reader comments, but we
do read them all and give them fair consideration. Let us know about your:
- Story ideas (topics, people to interview, etc.)
- News from the field
- Recommended resources (web sites, books, articles, papers,
organizations, etc.)
- Anything else that is relevant
- Scheduled Events send in your scheduled IRC Chats, and other
events.
