1898 - 1998 Centenial of the Spanish American War (Text and graphic research by Lincoln Cushing. This is a work in progress dedicated to better understanding a crucial period in United States history.)

Spanish American War (1898) Red Cross Museum (Brief paragraph on the changing role of the Red Cross just before and during the war; with links to:Clara Barton, more on the war, to 6 periods of Red Cross history, a virtual museum tour, the Red Cross homepage, and to other aspects of that organization.)

The Rough Riders by Theodore Roosevelt (Full text of Roosevelt's classic history of his 1st U.S. Vol. Cavalry's role in the Spanish-American War, written by him as war hero and new Governor of New York, less than 1 year after the war, in 1899. 6 clickable chapters and 4 appendices recount his military and political activities as Under-Secretary of the Navy on the eve of the war, transfer to the army, his recruiting and organizing efforts, war experiences including the siege of the Santiago de Cuba, the dismounted "charge" up San Juan Hill, postwar return, camp Wykoff and McKinley's visit. The appendices include the mustering- out roll of the "Rough Riders", Roosevelt's official 9/10/1898 report to the Secretary of War, a round robin letter, and corrections. Also clickable are a bibliography, illustrations, and an epigram by Bret Harte. Roosevelt, of course, would go on to be President of the United States, but also of the American Historical Association.)
