The fiery "spirit of '76" that swept the colonies into a war for independence, was sparked on January 10 by a rabble-rousing pamphlet, Common Sense, by Thomas Paine. Paine shouted for independence, and many of his readers shouted with him. In the following months the revolutionary spirit spread through the colonies.

At first, many colonial statesmen were hesitant about severing their bonds with Great Britain. But the crusade for independence gathered more and more support as it became increasingly apparent that only through force of arms could the colonies win the prize of liberty.

Finally, on July 4, 1776, Congress passed the Declaration of Independence, announcing to the world "...That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be, Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the Brisith Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved...."

The colonies had at last taken the step that meant either liberty or death. A union of states had never existed before. Now it was crucial that the states work and fight as one. The men who framed the Declaration had written, "...we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor." Excited men in the streets knew that this meant, in the words of Benjamin Franklin, "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately."

So the thirteen colonies joined forces against Great Britain. They asserted their right to "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," and the United States of America was born.

And rockets shoot up high
And blossom in the sky---
Blue and yellow, green and red
Flowers falling on my head,
And I don't ever have to go
To bed, to bed, to bed!

Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountain side
Let freedom ring.



My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,---
Thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills
Like that above.



Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees;
Sweet freedom's song;
Let mortal tongues awake,
Let all that breathe partake,
Let rocks their silence break,---
The sound prolong.



Our fathers' God, to thee,
Author of liberty,
To thee I sing;
Long may our land be bright
With freedom's holy light;
Protect us by thy might,
Great God our King.

That's when the flag
Goes waving by.

And the crackers crack,
And the popguns pop,
And the big guns boom
And never stop.

And we watch parades,
And listen to speeches,
And picnic around
On the beaches.

And it usually rains,
And it's always hot;
But we all like Fourth
Of July a lot.
