PIRES/Pine

Hello everyone,
I am a new member of the MadeiraExiles list. Please read the following information and contact me if you have any connections or helpful hints.

My great great grandfather was Lawrence Joseph PINE (Laurenco PIRES). He was born @1845 in Portugal (probably Madeira). I think his parents and he may have been Madeira Exiles. This is all I know about him. He was a member of the First Portuguese Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville, Illinois 1855-1860. On August 18, 1878, he was elected as presiding Elder to serve for three years. (I obtained this information from a woman in Jacksonville named Betty DeSilva) His wife's name was Lavinia (d. 9 Oct 1890). Lawrence died 7Nov 1884 in Jacksonville. Their first child was John Robert PINE (my g grandfather). He was born 12 Sept 1870 and died 8 Feb 1908. He was married to Rose MCKAVITT. Lawrence and Lavinia's second child (and last) was Joseph L. PINE who was born @1872 and died 9 Jan 1931 in Jacksonville. His wife was Cora MCCLUSKEKEY and he worked for Western Union Telegraph for forty years.

My grandfather was John Robert PINE b. 14 Feb 1902 in Jacksonville and d. 5 Jun 1985 in Jacksonville. He married Louise MALONEY who is still liviing in Jacksonville.

I visited Jacksonville almost every summer with my parents when I was growing up. I had heard the story of the Exiles and have always been interested in learning more about my family history.

I explored the webpage but was unable to find any adults with the last name Pires on the passenger lists that have been transcribed so far. Any suggestions for what to do next? Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Patricia Waiters--CA
