Maddux Cousins Queries

To: [email protected] Sun, 13 Sep 1998 I have been watching the action and it seems that everyone is connected but me. I haven't been able to get past the Civil War. I am aware that the war spilt families as well as whole communities, but I am hoping that your Rootsweb can assist me. I live in Canada, so it is hard for me to make little research trips to the large libraries that feasibly would hold the information I need.

William E. Mattox is my line. I have papers of his service in the civil war that shows he was given a medical discharge due to blindness. Follow-up papers show he applied for a disability pension. He must have died shortly after, for I show that his wife applied for a widows pension, which was denied, as apparently there were no records of a divorce from his first wife. The family story goes that he had served one term of service and was on his way home when he was advised that his wife had divorced him and remarried in his absence. He immediately re-enlisted and sometime later remarried. I have no documentation for any of this. Maggie was forced to live basically as a pauper, being supported by her children.

Lydia Alice Mattox is my line.
My mother, Augusta Kathryn Messer one of Lydia and Samuel Messer's thirteen children is still living. At the age of 92 she is very alert and is tremendously interested in all of this. I would love to be able to complete her line while she is still with. Hopefully, someone will recognize something in this babble. Alicemae Abbott Email
