Benjamin Wills Maddux

Found an old xerox of page 427 from a "Parker County Historical Book" handwritten across the top. Now I have to find this book! I quote....

Benjamin Wills Maddux was a descendant of the Maddux family who migrated from Wales to settle in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1635. His grandfather, Zachariah Maddux died in 1925 (obvious printing error!) at the age of 80.

In 1830 Benjamin and his wife, Catherine Powell, were living with six sons and two daughters in Gwinett County, Georgia. The children attended Grogans school in Milledgeville. Late in 1830, the family moved to Walker County, Georgia, which was newly opened Cherokee country. They settled near Trion. Benjamin and Catherine are buried in Bird Chapel Cemetery. Their eleven children gave them seventy-two grandchildren.

A deed recorded Feb. 23, 1852, shows the transfer of land to trustees of Trinity Methodist E. Church, with Benjamin W. Maddux and a trustee. The birthdate of Benjamin and his twin sister, Unica, is recorded in The Saints Everlasting Treatse (?) by John Wesley, with many other Maddux names. Several descendants of these Maddux families live in Parker

County.

About 1840 some of Benjamin's children began to move westward, to Alabama, Arkansas, and finally to Texas. One son, James Monroe Maddux who had fought in the Seminole War in Florida, looked after his parents and their property in addition to his teaching, and experienced Sherman's marches across their land during the War Between the States. When the war was over and his parents dead, he and his family moved to Arkansas and eventually settled in Brock, Parker County, Texas. >Billie Ruth Bell
