Introduction

The Surname Resources at RootsWeb do have cluster pages for some surnames. I've listed those with the same SOUNDEX as the major variations in Dutch of (MAT)THY(S)(SEN)(S) (the minor variations of T/TT, Y/IJ, /H, ... don't make a difference for the soundex code). All the surnames, that I consider as a real variation, are in bold, but I'm open for suggestions.

For this 32 surnames, variations of the MATTHEUS surname, you will find 20 mail lists and/or Genconnect boards.

I've grouped them in 6 main groups (MATTHEUS, MATTHEWS, MATHES, MATTHIES, MATTHIS and MATTHYS).

I didn't list the following variations: MADS (Danisch), MATEO (Spanish), MATHIEU (French), MATTE (Swedish), MATTEO (Italian), MATTI (Suomi) MATYAS (Hungarian) TEIS (Norwegian) TEWIE (South-African)

We do find in the Bible the following variations: Mattanja, Mattathias, Mattheus and Matthias.
