DALBY FAMILY HISTORY written by Norman Leonard
DALBY INTRODUCTION
I am the only surviving child of Warren
Knight DALBY, who was born in Granville County, North Carolina, on
February 18, 1806, and who settled at a place in Bowie County in the Republic of Texas,
later to become known as Dalby Springs, in 1839. I was born at Dalby Springs in Bowie
County, Texas, on February 17, 1876; and so far as I have been able to determine, I am the
oldest living member of the Dalby family which migrated from Granville County, North
Carolina, to Texas in during the first half of the 19th century. I have lived in Bowie
County, Texas all of my life and have taken an active part and interest in the affairs of
the people of the County, having served as a Justice of the Peace, State
Representative, County Attorney, and District Judge. I was licensed to practice law in
1907, and from that time until I became Disctrict Judge of the 102nd Judicial District,
composed of Bowie and Red River Counties, on January 1, 1935, I was engaged in the
general practice of law in Bowie and the surrounding counties. During the twenty year
period from January 1, 1935, to December 31, 1954, that I served as District Judge, I
presided over a court of general civil and criminal jurisdiction. As the result of my many
years of public and professional service, I have had an opportunity to become acquainted
with many of the families of Bowie and Red River Counties. After my retirement from public
and professional life on December 31, 1954, I devoted most of my time to the operation of
my small farming and ranching business until I retired from that undertaking on December
31, 1968. Since 1967, I have devoted a great deal of my time to gathering and reporting
the matters pertaining to my family history which will appear in the following manuscript,
and since January 1, 1969, I have devoted most all of my time and energy thereto. I am now
93 years old, and while time has taken its toll from me, I am still blessed with good
general health and with a sound mind and memory.
