Doris Fay Harris 11-26-1926--10-18-1993 October 20, 1993
I think most of you know that when we pause to think about people we love and who have meant so very much to us through the years, that there are sometimes several images or reflections of others which run across our minds. We remember thinks about a loved one that brings back lovely and meaningful memories or experiences we have cherished. We often say things like, "She is so much like her mother when she laughs; or he is just as hard-headed as his father; or that she looks just like her father." Today as we come to worship God and give thanks for the life of Doris Harris, there are two reflections of Biblical women that come to my mind whenever I was around Doris. The first is the image of the very practical and responsible woman called Martha. She, as you know, is the sister of Mary. They both were friends of Jesus and He must have been in their home several times. Both women were committed to Jesus and his ministry and both women wanted Jesus near when their brother Lazuras died. On one occasion He came to their house and Martha was responsible for the preparations. Martha knew how important it was for things to be ready and she did her best to see that Jesus' needs were met. Mary, on the other hand, sought time with Jesus to talk and listen to Him. Although Mary receives more credit, it was Martha, the dependable,, hard-working friend of Jesus who attended to the mundane and routine so that Jesus would receive gracious hospitality. I believe that Jesus loved and appreciated Martha and her concerns for Him and He knew how important it was to take care of the necessities of daily living. Doris was one of the many Martha's around this church and community. I often found her doing the kind of jobs which a lot of others would not do. She told me one day, as she was working in the kitchen, that she was more at home doing that than leading a study. Through the years, this church, The United Methodist Wormen, and Wesleyan Sunday School Class knew that Doris would do her share to help. One of the things that stands out with the family is that she was always there for them. We had to laugh a little and cry a little Monday when Jackie shared that last Friday her mother wanted to help here make out the grocery list for the meals so that no one would go hungry. God bless that pragmatic, dependable character trait. Our church, our homes and our community could not exist without the Doris' of life. There is another image which comes to my mind whenever I think of Doris. We read about an anonymous woman in the gospel of Mark who attends a dinner party for Jesus at Simon the Leper's house. She is so overwhelmed by Jesus' presence that she opens a costly bottle of perfume and pours it on the head of Jesus. Everyone is astounded at such a display and criiticize her for her extravagant behaviour. Why did she not sell the perfume and give the money to the poor. Jesus finally hears enough of the self-righteousness criticism and He tell the folk to leave her alone. "She has done a beautiful thing. She has done what she could." Although this story is not one of the top ten favorites of the church, it does express an impulsive, extravagant generosity which was appreciated by Jesus. It express a faith about life that is joyous and exciting. You can almost hear the laughter and song as she greets Jesus with her simple and gracious gift. I can only imagine that this woman was the only one there that relly had a good time. There were many times that Doris would give you a simple but extravagant gift out of her generous heart. Her joy in giving and living would dance in her eyes and be sharred in her laughter. For me, one of her greatest gifts to all of us has been her humor. Her wit has on many occasions help us through some real tough times. Nor was she averse at poking a little fun at herself or what might be thought of as sacred. "She has done what she could." What a great tribute to any life. To recognize what God has given you and joyously, freely and extravagantly share that with others is an expression of one's faith in God. It matters little about the size, the quantity or quality of the the gift offered. It does matter when we are gifted and can do things with our lives and our possessions and refuse to use them as God desires of us. What set the anonymous woman of scripture apart from the rest of the dinner guests was probably not her family, or her wealth, or her education, or her job; but her willingness to do what she could do. Scripture tells us that Jesus said that wherever the gospel is proclaimed this woman woud be remembered. I suggest to you that is true about all those who are willing to joyously, extravagantly give what God has given them to others. "Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little. Enter into the joys prepared for you." Thanks be to God for Doris Harris, our sister in faith, who has witnessed to her love of her family, her sunday school class, her St Luke's Methodist Church and her Lord Jesus Christ by her steadfast, joyous service. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all you creatures here below, Praise Father, Son and Holy Spirit. AMEN.
