I had an opportunity today to stop in at the library in Greene County, MS. One thing
that sort of prompted me was the fact that they have a community called NEELEY, MS there.
What I found created some confusion for me. You will note that the McCaskill family
married into the NEELEY family here in MS.
From
Records of Greene County, Mississippi (1812-1820 Tax Rolls)
1812 Tax Roll
p. 2. Joseph NEELEY 1 White Poll tax; $1.00
p. 3 Jacob NEELEY 200 Acres - Tax .50
1815 Tax Rolls
p. 6 David NEELEY 1 White Poll Tax
p. 7. Joseph NEALY 1 White Poll Tax
1816 Census
Jacob NEALY 2-1-1-2-6-0-1-7
Thomas NEALY 1-1-1-2-5-0-0-5
Daniel McCaskill 1-5-1-2-0-0-0-9
Joseph NEALY 1-1-1-0-3-0-0-3
Categories are
White Males >21, White Males <21, White Females >21, White Females <21,
Total, Free Negroes, Slaves, and Grand Total.
1816 Tax Roll
p. 18 Jacob NEALY
p. 18 Thomas NEALY
1817 Tax Roll
p. 23 David NEELEY 1 White Poll Tax
p. 27 Daniel McCaskill 1 White Poll Tax
p. 28 Peter McCaskill 1 White Poll Tax
1818 Tax Roll
p. 31 David NEALY .95
p. 31 Thomas NEALY 1.50
p. 31 James NEALY .83
p. 34 Peter McCaskill 17.49
1819 Tax Roll
p. 46 Thomas NEALY 620 Acres
p. 48 James NEALY 1 White Poll Tax $1.00
p. 48 David NEALY "
1820 Tax Roll
Thomas NEALY 2 Polls 1 Slave $1.50
Jacob NEALY 1 Poll 1 Slave $1.50
The part that is also confusing is that Patricia Edwards and Jean Strickland in Who
married Whom in Greene County, Mississippi also list the following:
p. 76 Jacob NEELEY b. NC 1758 m. Rebecca ? 1820 Census
p. 76 Thomas NEELEY b. 1787 m. Catherine McCaskill b. SC 1807
So somehow the Greene County folks (once a part of Alabama) are stating that this group
of Neeley folks once lived in their area.
