Notes for HENRY MACHEN, JR.:
Henry Machen, Jr. was born December 19, 1745 in Virginia.   We found the Machen family listed there among the Quakers.  They practiced the Quaker faith.  Henry Machen's father was Henry Machen.  We do not have information at this time on his mother.
Henry, Jr.  was a Revolutionary Soldier and moved to Greenville, South Carolina.  He married Frances Ballinger before 1773.  I have just been given some information on the Ballingers which links them back to England.   I have not had time to check it out, but, if it is true, her father was also named Francis.  There were two more generations listed in this material.
I found a copy of Henry's will at Greenville, South Carolina.   His father's will was filed in both Virginia and South Carolina.
Henry Machan, Jr. died on December 10, 1821 in Greenville, South Carolina.  Frances died November 3, 1826 also in Greenville.

3.  FRANCES BALLINGER3 MACHEN (FRANCES2 BALLINGER, FRANCIS1 BALLENGER) was born 04 March, 1792 in Greenville, South Carolina, and died Abt. 1879 in Placerville, California or El Dorado, California.  She married JABEZ GALT Bef. 1813 in South Carolina, son of JAMES GALT.

Notes for JABEZ GALT:
Jabez Galt was born on April 19, 1789 in Newberry, South Carolina, the son of James Galt and an unknown spouse.  He married Frances Ballinger Machen before 1813. Frances was born on March 4, 1792 in Greenville, South Carolina.   She was the daughter of Henry Machen, Jr. and Frances Ballenger.  The family moved to Canton, Cherokee County, Georgia around 1842-43.  Jabez was a merchant.

The Galts were very active in the Baptist Church.  A spokes person at the church office said there had been Galts taking an active part there from the time of their arrival in Cherokee County to the present.  Most of those years one of them had served as church Treasurer
.
Jabez Galt died October 1, 1850.  He was buried in Canton.    After the death of her husband, Franges went to California on a wagon train.   Her son, Henry Galt, was traveling west also.  Frances died in California about 1789 though I have written all around where she supposed to have been,
The Galt's son Joel took over his father's business and was a very successful merchant.  One Galt descendant has some letters pertaining to John Gilland.

Generation No. 4

4.  MARGARET MACHEN4 GALT (FRANCES BALLINGER3 MACHEN, FRANCES2 BALLINGER, FRANCIS1 BALLENGER) was born 01 April, 1813 in South Carolina, and died 27 March, 1881 in Cassville, Bartow County, Georgia.  She married JOHN GILLILAND VERNON 15 September, 1831 in Spartenburg, Spartenburg Co. South Carolina, son of JAMES VERNON and MARGARET JORDAN.

Notes for JOHN GILLILAND VERNON:
John Gilliland Vernon was born in Welford , South Carolina in 1808. He was the son of James Vernon and Margaret Jordan. John married Margaret Machen Galt  in Spartenburg, South Carolina on September 15, 1831. Margaret was born in South Carolina on April 1, 1813, the daughter of Jabez Galt and Frances Ballinger Machen. The couple lived in Spartenburg for several years.  John's occupation at that time is unknown.  The 1840 South
Carolina Census shows them to be in Spartenburg.  He was shown to be Administrator of his brother, Andrew J. Vernon's Will in 1841-42 in Spartenburg.

Around 1843 the Vernon's joined Margaret's family and other settlers from the Spartenburg area  in moving to the newly opened area of Georgia left vacant when the Indians were marched to Oklahoma. John's name was found on the applicant's list for Bounty Land.Sometime before 1844 the Vernon family moved to Cassville, Georgia  where we find them on the 1850 Georgia Census. John's occupation was listed as a farmer.

According to information learned from a cousin, Larue Roberts, who descended from John's wife's family, the Galt's,  John was an over-seer on a large plantation prior to and during the Civil War. The owner was a Mr. Brown. Toward the end of the war valuable items were buried or hidden well to prevent them being stolen by looters. It seems,  according to family stories, that Sherman's men came through the area where this plantation was located. They asked where valuables were located and John refused to tell them. The soldiers hung him on the gate-posts and left him for dead. The slaves who had remained loyal to John cut him down after the soldiers left and saved his life.  Carol Taggert, a cousin who descends from John G. Vernon through Franklin DeFae  and John Hudson Vernon says this fits with stories she heard her grandfather tell about things being hidden during the Civil War.  According to records I have located John was also a member of  the Home Guard during the Civil War.

Another Galt , Margaret McGruder, told me she has letters concerning John Gilliland Vernon found in the attic at her home in Cassville. I hope to obtain copies of these one day.  She lives in a Galt family home.  According to this same cousin the Vernon family were members of the Baptist Church.  John had joined with his wife, Margaret,  as her family were Baptists.

The 1870 Georgia Census lists John as a Stock Trader as does the 1880 one.  Both of these show him living in the same house as his son, Franklin DeFae.  In 1880 they were  living in Cherokee County, Georgia.

Margaret Machen Galt died on March 27, 1881.  I was given this date also for the death of John Gilliland, but it may be incorrect according to Carol Ann Taggert Moran who has information leading us to believe John Gilliland gave the history of his family at a Vernon family reunion held in South Carolina in the 1890's.

Generation No. 5

6.  FRANKLIN DEFAE5 VERNON (MARGARET MACHEN4 GALT, FRANCES BALLINGER3 MACHEN, FRANCES2 BALLINGER, FRANCIS1 BALLENGER) was born 07 October, 1838 in Spartenburg, Spartenburg Co. South Carolina, and died 14 August, 1918 in Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida.  He married ELIZA THORNTON HUDSON 27 November, 1867 in unknown, daughter of HUDSON and UNKNOWN.

Notes for FRANKLIN DEFAE VERNON:
Franklin DeFae Vernon was born in Spartenburg, South Carolina on October 7, 1838.  He was the son of John Gilliland Vernon and Margaret Machan Galt.   Franklin moved with his family to Cherokee County, Georgia at a young age.  He grew up in Cherokee County and was a young man at the time the Civil War began. Franklin enlisted in the CSA and served for the duration of the war.  He was a Private in Civil War-Company B, "Canton Infantry".
Franklin married Eliza Thornton Hudson on November 27, 1867 according to family records given to me by Selma Lamberson. This also agrees with the date Foster Vernon had in research he did on the family history.   No record of their marriage has been located at this time and no one knows where the Vernons were married.   We have also been unable to find any information on Eliza's  parents.   The 1900 and the 1880 Census records both say she was born in Tennessee and that her parents were born in Kentucky.  At this time we are leaning toward her being related to Hudsons who were in Ballard and McCracken County, Kentucky as some of them moved to Tennessee.  However, this is still speculation at this point.  It has also been suggested by a fellow researcher that the name may have been Hutson rather than Hudson.  At any rate, this is still an unsolved puzzle.
Franklin and Eliza were found on the 1880 Census records at Wolf Run District # 1041, Stamp Creek, Georgia.  At that time Franklin's age was given as 35 and Eliza's as 27.  Franklin's father, John Gilliland Vernon, was found listed on this census in the same household.  Margaret Machan Galt Vernon was not listed with them.  It is a mystery where she was at this time as her date of death was not until 1881.  Both Franklin and John Gilliland Vernon's occupations were listed as Stock trader.  (This would have been livestock).
Franklin and Eliza decided to move to Florida sometime around 1899-1900.  Eliza was found on the 1900 Bartow County Census along with Carroll, Mamie Irene, Hortense, and Frank.  Franklin must have been in Florida by then preparing a place for his family to move.  Sometime in the early 1900's, Eliza traveled with her remaining children to Tampa, Florida by train.  The family settled on a farm located on old Hi way 301 (now known as Harney Road)  in the Harney Community.  They lived in a large two story house on the top of a hill.  This house burned about 1933.  There was an orange grove beside and in back of the house but it is not known whether the Vernons planted this or whether it was already in existence when they moved in.
Franklin and Eliza donated land for a school to be built on the Southwest corner of their property.  Their children,Hortense and Frank, and perhaps Mamie Irene attended this school which would also be attended by the Frank Vernon children in later years.  The property eventually reverted back to the Vernons after the school was closed.
Franklin and Eliza also purchased land across Hi way 301 from their home property.   It  extended over a mile down the highway and took in the property across from Hillsborough United Methodist Church.  The church did not exist at that time.  It is not known how many acres they eventually owned.   A part of this property was  planted in orange groves.   Sunnybrook Dairy farm is located on a part of this property today.   It was all sold after the death of Frank and Lila Vernon and none of it remains in the family today.
The Vernons raised their children in the Baptist faith.  It is not known what church their membership was located.    Franklin was a tall man.  His hair was dark in younger years but was white in the picture I have seen.  Eliza also appeared to be a tall woman and had white hair in the picture.
The Vernons had eight children, seven of whom grew to adulthood.  They are mentioned later in this book.  One son, Frank McClintock Vernon, was born on April 15, 1881 and died about 1887.  The cause of his death is not known.   Selma Matthews Lamberson came to live with the Vernons after the death of her mother, Georgia Eliza Vernon Matthews, eldest daughter of the Vernons,   in 1903.  She remained with them until they died and then lived on in the house with the Frank Vernon family.
Eliza died on March 25, 1915 and Franklin on August 14, 1918.  They are buried in Jackson Heights Cemetery.  There graves are marked.

Notes for CARROLL ROWELL VERNON:

Carroll Rowell Vernon was born in Stamp Creek, Ga., The son of Franklin DeFae Vernon and Elizia Thornton Hudson, September 28, 1879.He grew to manhood   in Stamp Creek and moved to Hillsborough Co., Fl. about 1900 with his parents and others.

Carroll married Ruby Boully in 1913.  No history is known about her except she was the sister of Charlie Matthews who lived in the Harney, Fl. area. Carroll and Ruby had one daughter, Sybil,  who married Morgan J. Foley. The Vernon's also had a stillborn child according to information from Selma Lamberson. Carroll and Ruby were divorced sometime before 1921..

Carroll Vernon operated a grocery store and meat shop in Ybor City for many years. Later he moved his store to Lake Avenue. Carroll cut meat to sell as did most grocers of the era. I recall going to his store and always being
given a piece of candy.

Mr. Vernon was married to Margaret Smith in 1927. No history is known about her other than she had a son named Scott who was born abt. 1919-1920. This couple were also divorced. Carroll had an apartment house which he ran in addition to his store during this time.

In later years Carroll lived with Frank and Lila Mary Vernon in Harney. After he became ill he went to stay with his sister, Irene Seeley,  who cared for him until his death in 1959 at the age of eighty.

"Uncle Carroll"  was over six feet tall with a slender build. He had blue eyes and a medium complexion.  When the author first remembers him he was close to sixty-five years old and had white hair. He carried himself very erectly and was a very quiet, soft-spoken man.
Carroll was very much a home-body.  When his brother, Jim, died Melvin Vernon was driving Carroll and his father, Frank Vernon to Texas for the funeral.  They got to Louisianna and Carroll very quietly gave instructions to take him to the bus station.  He had gone as far as he could stand it and was ready to return home.  He did just that.

15.  FRANK WILLARD6 VERNON (FRANKLIN DEFAE5, MARGARET MACHEN4 GALT, FRANCES BALLINGER3 MACHEN, FRANCES2 BALLINGER, FRANCIS1 BALLENGER) was born 16 November, 1893 in Stamp Creek Georgia, and died 16 July, 1963 in Arcadia, Desoto County, Florida.  He married LILA MARY TANNER 01 August, 1915 in Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida, daughter of WILLIAM TANNER and MARY ROBLES.

Notes for FRANK WILLARD VERNON:
Frank Willard Vernon was born November 16, 1893 in Stamp Creek Georgia, son of Franklin DeFae Vernon and Eliza Thornton Hudson.  He traveled on a   train with his family as a small boy to Hillsborough County, Florida where the family bought property in the Harney area.   Mr. Vernon attended school in Harney and in Tampa, Florida.  He married Lila Mary Tanner ,  daughter of Mary Orphelia/Opelia Robles and  William Charles Tanner on August 1, 1915 in Tampa, Florida.

Mr. and Mrs. Vernon resided on the family homestead and he did contract grove work.   During the winter months numerous orders of citrus fruit were picked, packed, and shipped north.    He farmed until 1937 at which time Mr. Vernon began working at Stokely's Canning Plant.   Mr. Vernon worked at the Tampa Shipyard from 1941-1945.  He then worked for Stokely's again for a year or two.   In later years, Mr. Vernon had worm beds and grew vegetables which he sold at his Mule- Driven cane stand.  He also boarded horses.   The dairy farm was leased out.  "Pop" as he was lovingly called by all children around, gave hay-rides at which each child received a large straw hat.  Mrs. Vernon sold Raleigh and Stanley Products, taking orders on the telephone.   In later years she also shelled peas to sell.   A lot of family stories were passed down and words of wisdom exchanged as the older grandchildren sat around Granny's newspaper covered rug when we helped with shelling peas.

The Vernons, along with  others in their community,  decided they needed a church in the neighborhood.  The people met and decided to build a church building.  They  decided to ask a Presbyterian minister from town to come out to preach for them for one Sunday a month.  Other denominations were also invited to preach whenever they were available.   A Sunday School was organized which met every Sunday.   Afer a number of years a vote was taken as to the denomination the church would be.   The Methodist had the most votes and so the Hillsborough Methodist Church was organized. The members of the other denominations became Methodists.  Mr. Vernon had been a member of the Baptist Church prior to this time.    Mrs. Vernon had grown up in the Methodist Church.

The Vernons were charter members of Hillsborough Methodist Church and served the church in many  capacities.   Both of them served on the Church Board.   Pop was a church trustee for many years.   Mrs. Vernon sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School Classes and was active in the Women's group.  She occasionally played the piano for church services.  She was always present at the weekly quilting and made many "fancy-work" projects for the church bazaar.  "Pop" usually sat on the back row at church.     He couldn't carry a tune but proudly sang along, his way of praising God.  He was frequently heard to give a loud "Amen".

Mr. Vernon developed Leukemia in later years.  He took part in experimental treatment programs and was
heard to remark, "I'm doing this for my Grand kids.  " At the time of his death he had lived longer than any patient on record and some of the drugs tested on him would later benefit children.  His doctor notified the family of his case history being written up for a Medical Journal report.

The Vernons were called Pop and Granny by their grandchildren.    Pop was about six feet tall and was a well proportioned man with striking brown eyes and a ready smile.   In earlier years he liked to hunt.  In later years he grew a big garden, raised fishing worms, raised a few pigs and boarded horses.   Pop loved Cuban Coffee and would stop to buy it any time he was near Ebor City.   He would always warn any of us who might be along with him not to tell "Mama" as he called Granny.   Pop was a big-hearted man who trusted everyone.  He often hired drifters to help with grove work.  On one such occasion a "trusted"  employee stole his truck during the night.    Another one stole his best suit.  There were often as many as six employees at a time who were also boarders.  Granny cooked for all of them.

Granny was a short, stout woman and had blue eyes.    She liked to fish and to go to the beach.  She could float  on top of the water and would do so for a good length of time, a feat her grandchildren all tried to accomplish .
Granny  Tatted and Crocheted.   She always had several projects in progress and would sit and work on these for hours at a time.  We could all look forward to some kind of "fancy work" for Christmas along with the dollar bill she gave each child.   All the new babies received a tatted cap and booties.  Some of these are still used by Granny's great, great grandchildren.  Granny always had something good to say about anyone we might criticize.

Granny and Pop's home was on highway 301 which was paralleled by the railroad tracks.  Drifters often knocked on the door and asked for food.  Granny always found a job for each of them to do and fed them on the back porch.  I don't think she ever turned anyone away.

The whole family gathered at Pop and Granny's for most holidays.   Christmas  gatherings are especially memorable.  Everyone took their special foods and the house was filled with much conversation and laughter. Always before gifts were opened, the older grandchildren organized a First Christmas play.  We rummaged in Granny's closet for bathrobes for costumes and dragged the family cradle out to use for a manger.  (The cradle was first used when Mary Thornton was a baby and was given to Granny by an old lady she helped who had no grandchildren.  The cradle is now being used by Jeannine Henderson, granddaughter of Mary Thornton.)   The newest baby was always Baby Jesus.  Pop would make everyone stop whatever they were doing to watch us perform.  No matter how many lines we forgot or how off-key our songs we were praised for our efforts.  We learned from them that families are for loving.

Mrs. Vernon died on July 1, 1962.   Her death certificate says she died in a Diabetic Coma.  Mr. Vernon died July 16, 1963. Both are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Tampa, Florida.
