From: [email protected] Date: Fri, 5 Feb 1999 09:02:01 EST Subject: Shaderick Fountain Stephen: I have a branch of my Fountain's that went north from the Eastern Shore of MD to NJ. I do not have a record of Shaderick but he might be tied into the following and I'm not aware of it. If you think he is let me know and I'll send the rest of the Ancestors. Jane Ref: This Old Monmouth (county in NJ) of Ours, by William S. Hornor (I don't have any date on this book, I only have a copy of the cover and 1 page) The Huguenot Fountains There are said to have been two families of the name of Fountain who came to this country at an early date and who are connected, if at all, very distantly. The immigrant ancestor of one of these families is said to have reached New York as early as 1650 and to have died there at the age of 100, leaving a son Moses, who is said to have reached the age of 104. The other family, whose name in the early records is spelled de la Fontaine, is said to have settled in Virginia as early as 1716. The immigrant ancestor is said to have left two sons -- the Reverend Peter, who died without issue, and the Reverend Francis, who left descendants, some of whom made their way into Maryland and New Jersey. The writer has available no details concerning the direct ancestry of the Reverend John Fountain, of Freneau, but believes him to have come from this last branch. Note: As researchers we know the above to be inaccurate..Also the family of Rev. John is actually descendant of Nicholas Fountaine branch from Somerset Co., MD in 1663. (Back to quoting from the book) Reverend John Fountain (1), lived at the present Freneau, and is noted for the number of marriages that he performed. He died in 1835, at the age of seventy-five. His wife, Elizabeth, died in 1836. Both are buried in Rose-Hill cemetery, at Matawan. He had children: Asbury (2), born 1800; Wesley; Augustus; Theodore; Eliza; and Phoebe. Asbury Fountain (2) (actually named John Asbury Fountain), son of Rev. John (1) was three times married, the first two wives being sisters, of the family Frost, and the third, Catherine, daughter of Major David Provoost and widow of "Squire" William Herbert. The children were: Charles W., James, William A. and Luther. William A. Fountain, son of Asbury, married Annie Fielder. Their Children were: Eleanor, Robert, a Banker of South River, who married Ella Tully, and has son Robert; and Emma Fielder, who married William A. Cose, and lives at Matawan.
