1. PETER II6 FOUNTAINE (JACQUES IV [JAMES]5, JACQUES III4 DE LA FOUNTAINE, JACQES3 DE LA FONTAINE II, JEAN2, JACQUES1) was born ca 1691, and died July 1757 in Charles City, VA. He married (1) ELIZABETH [SARAH] WADE. He married (2) ELIZABETH FORURREAU.

Notes for PETER FONTAINE:

In 1716 Peter and Elizabeth sailed for Virginia, arriving at Hampton about December 11, 1716. John met them on the 14th and they went with him to Williamsburg, where they decideed to stay. In a few days Peter and John went to view the parishes and plantations, returning to Williamsburg on the 29th.

In February 1717 upon receiving a presentation to the Roanoke parish, Peter began his ministry in his new homeland. This followed by pastorates in Wallingford, Weynoake, Martins, Brandon and Jamestown. In 1720 he became minister to the three churches in Westover Parish. Peter remained there until his death in 1757. The length of this parish was 30 miles, the number of families - 233, of communications - 75. There were two glebes in the parish, neither of which had houses on them and rented for 30 shillings. Rev. Peter lived in his own house and on his own farm, located in Westover Parish (which now Charles City County) about two miles to the northward of the James River, about midway between Weyoake and Swineyards. His annual salary besides perquisites, was from 50 to 60 pounds.

Notes for ELIZABETH [SARAH] WADE:

Notes for SARAH WADE:

From a memorandum left by Abraham Fontaine;

December 24, 1783, Sarah Fontaine made her will in Louisa Co., Virginia and gave her two slaves to her son, Abra-ham Fontaine. Aaron Fontaine was one of the witnesses.

Please note: Sarah may have been named, Sarah Elizabeth as many of the early family genealogists refer to her as Elizabeth.

Notes for ELIZABETH FOURREAU:

November 1713, James was contacted by Capt. Boulay, an 80 year old gentleman who was a half-pay cavarly officer who was only a slight acquaintance to the family. The Captain offered his granddaughter, Elizabeth Fourreau (Fon-neau), age 13, in marriage to one of his sons. She apparently was the Captain's only heir, both of her parents had al-ready passed on. James agreed to have Elizabeth come live with them as a boarder. So that his sons then could de-cide which liked her best and which she preferred. She was said to have a sweet disposition, amiable temper with fair natural talents but an extremely neglected education.

It was decided that Peter should be the one to take Elizabeth as his wife. They were married March 29, 1714 with great privacy as Peter had not yet taken his degree of Bachelor of Arts.

Captain Boulay died March 1715.

Notes for JOSEPH FONTAINE I:

The Virginia Inheritance of Joseph Fontaine (1748-1813) By J.P. Hale

Joseph Fountaine (son of Rev Peter Fontaine of Westover Parish) was the ancestor of the Missouri and Oregon Fountains. He was born in Westover Parish, Charles City County, Va. in 1748. When  fifteen years of age (his father deceased 1759) his brother Peter Jr. b. 1720 was appointed his guardian; Joseph mi-grated to Henrico County where he bound himself as apprentice to George Donald, a cabinet maker of Richmond, for six years from date, July 4, 1763.

Interestingly his contemporary, Pierre Francois Leonard Fontaine, 1762-1853, born in France, educated in Rome as an architect became the "father" of French Empire furniture design. With his collaborator, Charles Percier he restored Malmaison on order of Napoleon and planned the joining of the Louvre and the Tuileries.

The following Henrico County, Virginia records tells the story of Joseph's delays in gaining possess of the land left to him by his father; "It is ordered that a summons be issued to Hanover County to summon Peter Fontaine, guardian of Joseph Fontaine to appear at the next term of Court and render account of his ward's estate, September 3, 1764.
"Peter Fontaine failing to appear to render account of his ward's estate, Court instructed Sheriff to summon him to next court, August 3, 1767".
"Peter Fontaine failing to appear to render an account of his ward's estate, the Sheriff is ordered to appear at next Court to render such account, August 3, 1768".
"Peter Fontaine given further time to render an account of his ward, Joseph Fontaine, orphan of the Rev. Peter Fontaine, deceased, August 7, 1769".x(The last records shows conclusive proof that Rev. Peter Fontaine was father of Joseph Fontaine, ancestor of Missouri and Oregon line. The name was anglicized March 12, 1812 in son's marriage bond when Joseph Jr. married Hannah Hicks at Christian County Kentucky). Evidently Peter Jr. did not appear at Court before December 26, 1771 to give Joseph 600 acres on Hicoottomy River in Halifax County, as on that date Joseph sold to his brother Moses (6 years older) that number of acres in that locale. Since there are no records to indicate otherwise, we assume that the 600 acres are all that Joseph received of the 6000 acres patented by his father, Rev. Peter. Who had accompanied William Byrd and party as chaplain when the "Divid-ing Line between Virginia and North Carolina was run in the Year of Our Lord 1728".
In Mecklenburg County, VA on February 8, 1773, Joesph Fontaine married Mary Goode, born 1754, daughter of Edward and Judith Morton Goode and granddaughter of Thomas Morton and Elizabeth Woodson Goode.
