Eldredge" <[email protected]> Subject: Matthew Fountain This is what my Fountain book says about Matthew Fountain: Matthew 4 Fountain (Joseph II, 3, Joseph I, 2, Rev Peter 1) born in Christian co KY, married in Boone Co Mo, on 5 July1836, to Sarah Hicks b 22 Sep 1822 in bocomo. In the early summer of 1852, Matthew and his family left Missouri for oregon. They made the hazardous trip successfully, arriving there the 18th of Sep. They applied for a Donation land claim in Linn Co, and settled on it the 7th of Oct. The Ooregon Doantion Law provided that 640 acres of free land be granted to a married settler (320 a. in the wife's name.) between the years 1850 and 1883. These laws were introduced and supported by Senators Linn and Benton of Mo. This free land was perhaps the most powerful incentive in the great trek to Oregon. After Matthew's death on 2 Feb, 1879, and burial in Central Point Cemkin Jackson Co, Ore, Sarah went to live with her son John M. her death occurred 4 Jan 1905. Their children were Theodocia, b 5 Dec 1837.d 23 Sep 1904. m. Jacob McDaniel. Joseph b 18 Dec 1839 d. 12 Mar 1917 m Mary Eslick Mary Jane b 28 Nov 1841 m Wm Fountain James Davis b 18 Dec 1843, emigrated with his parents to Ore. he became a merchant and settled in Ashland, Jackson Co in 1866. in 1878 he m Grace Russell, b 1858 in Ca. Elizabeth b 30 Jun 1846 d 24 may 1866 John M. b 28 Feb 1848 m. Octavia after his fathers deat, his mother, and his brothers Delozon S and Robert L lived with him and Octavia Eliza b 17 Juy 1850 Pleasant Luther b 25 Sep 1853 m Reabecca Hockersmith 20 Sep 1882 William Burton b 13 Nov 1855 d. 2 Feb 1879 bur muddy Creek or Schooling Cem Linn co Henry Kalfus b 26 Apr 1857 Delozon Smith b 5 Mar 1861 Alice Bell b 3 Aug 1863 d 9 May 1876 Robert E. Lee b 13 oct 1865 Sister of Matthew Fountain, Icyphena b 22 may 1816 in Christian Co KY, m 6 March 1834 to Henry Schooling. They also went to Oregon with Matthew's family in 1852. Web
