Here is more about Matthew Fountain/Fontaine of Hempstead AR. This is from
the Matthew Fountain/Fontaine family bible provided by direct descendants of
his. Also included is some census records that I received from another
researcher. The Bible is in possession of Mrs. Charles (Fontaine) McCullough,
Mineral Springs, AR.

Parmelia Jane Fontaine was born Nov. 4th, 1816 [dau. of Matthew & Patsy]
Margaret Fontaine was born Nov. 3rd, 1817 [ditto]

30 Apr. 1797 Patsy Johnson b. in NC [Fontaine family records]
1810 Census of Christian co. KY: Three Fountain/Fowntin families listed;
only one with male age likely to be Matthew is that of Josiph Fowntin
(whose household includes two males 16-26). Patsy is no doubt in the
household of one of the three William Johnsons (most likely the first one
listed, p. 11 of the Simmons transcription).
15 Dec. 1815 Matthew Fontain m. Patsey Johnson, dau. of Wm. Christian (or
Caldwell) co. KY; mention of Joseph Fontain in license (bondsman?)
ca. 1817 Matthew Fountaine "of Virginia" settled on Mount Prairie, west of
Washington, Hempstead co. AR (according to Pioneers and Makers of Arkansas
p. 283)
1818 Matthew Fontaine settled in Hempstead co., according to letter
written by his son Edward in the Arkansas Gazette 14 Jan. 1886 (reprinted
in Hempstead Trails Oct. 1997)
10 May 1827 Matthew Fountain granted land warrant in what is now Hempstead
co., section 14, twp. 11S, range 26W, 80 acres.

William Johnson Jr. his attorney to collect legacies due him "as one of the
