Dear Doris,
My 4g grandfather William Fountain was born in Edgecombe or Duplin Co. NC in 1750, the son of Henry Fountain (d. 1797) of Edgecombe/Duplin Co.
Henry had several sons of whom William was the oldest. Henry was the son of John Fountain (d. 1764) probably the son of Marcy Fountain and grandson of
Nicolas Fountain who emigrated from France. Henry had a brother named William Fountain who served in the revolutionary war in SC (with Francis
Marion I believe), moved to South Carolina, and finally settled in Jefferson County, GA where he died about 1816, a very old man. He was
born before 1742, but I do not know the exact date. My 4g grandfather was his nephew and namesake and also served in the revolutionary war, but in VA
and MY. The family spelled the name Fontaine, Fountaine, and Fountaine indifferently until about 1830 when the name regularized as Fountain. I
was wondering if either William or Henry or John Fountain might be among Fountains you have been investigating?

Dear Doris,
Thank you for sharing your information. There are so many Fountains in Edgecombe county between 1750-1800 that it is very difficult to make
sense of them. The inventory and disposition (1799) of the estate of Henry Fountain (before 1730-1797) shows that the buyers of the estate were
Mary Fountain, James, John Fountain, and ISRAEL Fountain. James and John are known to have been his his brothers and I presume that Mary and Israel
are either siblings or cousins or niece/nephew. His children were Sally (who married ? Wiatt), Elisabeth (who married ? Spear), Henry II, Thomas, and
William my 4g grandfather. A second William Fountain, a generation older than my 4g grandfather, was often engaged in real estate transactions
with Henry, John and James Fountain and I presume him to be a brother, but do not know this. He had moved to South Carolina before Henry's death.
Henry was the executor of the estate of John Fountain I (1694-1764). John's children are known to have been John II, Henry, James, possibly William,
and a sister (name unknown) who married Starling Digges. I have only seen abstracts of the materials and cannot be certain of the relationships,
but practice at that time strongly suggests that these relationships are correct. This John Fountain almost certainly moved from VA or MY to NC
sometime before 1740. Unfortunately records in NC before that time are very spotty and accessible only at the state archives in Raleigh. And John
Fountain, like William, is an especially common name.
William Fountain my 4g grandfather had several children, names not now known, including an Owen Fountain, who is presumed to be my 3g
grandfather, and with whom he lived in his old age in Emanuel/Lowdnes/Thomas Cos, GA. Elenor Fountain, my 2g grandmother, is Williams granddaughter, proved
by a deed of land from 1828, so the relationship from that point on is certain.
An extensive search of census records, shown a number of other Fountains from Emanuel Co, GA who appear to be relatives (both William and Owen
had several children on the basis of Census records 1790-1830), but their names are unknown to me.
My hope is to find some other researcher whose materials are a sufficient fit with what I have to perhaps close the gaps which currently exist.
Thanks for your quick response to my previous inquiry,
John Knoblock
