Obituary: Richard Critchfield, 63, war correspondent
Author and journalist Richard Critchfield, 63, died Dec. 10 after suffering a massive stroke.
Mr. Critchfield, who lived in Berkeley, Calif., and once was a correspondent for the old
Washington Star, was in the District to launch his new book, "The Villagers," when he suffered
the stroke.
Raised in North Dakota, Mr. Critchfield graduated from the University of Washington and
received a master's in journalism from Columbia University. He served in the Army during the
Korean War and shortly after began his reporting career .
As a free-lancer, he covered the India-Pakistan war of 1962, then joined The Star, which sent
him to cover the Vietnam War and later assigned him to cover the White House.
Mr. Critchfield' s first book was about the Vietnam War. His new book is about many of the
villages he visited in Poland and Russia.
He is survived by a sister, Peggy Critchfield Moffett of Berkeley , and a brother, Jim Critchfield
of Delaplane, Va.
