Obituary for Charles Critchfield:

CHARLES CRITCHFIELD The Venerable Father of Representative C. E. Critchfield Passes Away. Charles Critchfield, the venerable father of Hon. Charles E. Critchfield, departed this life Wednesday, aged over 86 years. The funeral occurred yesterday at the Jelloway Church. Rev. J. W. Lowe of this city officiating. The subject of this brief sketch, Charles Critchfield, was a farmer, and resided on the old Indian fields, southwest of Howard, in Howard Township. In February, 1889, he sustained a paralytic stroke, and was confined to his bed during the remainder of his life. This stroke, together with heart trouble, brought about his death. He was born in Somerset County, Pa., not later than 1804, and probably a year earlier. Two years later his father came to Knox county. At the age of 25 Mr. Critchfield married a daughter of Benj. Butler, who bore him three children, G. W., now in California, Charles E., of this city, and Amanda, deceased. His first wife died in 1848, and he married again in 1850, three children being born to him, Albert, living near Danville, Ella, wife of William Reed, living at her father's home, and Judson, deceased.

From an obituary dated in pencil, Amanda Vincent Critchfield died while visiting the home of her son in Hillsboro, OH. She had resided in Mt. Vernon for many years and her remains were returned there for the funeral. The cemetery is not given, but is probably in Mt. Vernon, OH. She was a member of the Vine St. Christian Church. Birth date from notes by either Nell or Joan Brightman.

Charles Edward Critchfield and Wilson Critchfield (who married Martha Vincent and was my ggg-grandfather) were said to be first cousins. This would be true if Wilson Critchfield was actually James Wilson Critchfield. There are other reasons to suspect this (see the entry for James W. Critchfield, son of Samuel). Birth date of 25 Nov 1836 from notes written by Nell or by Joan Brightman.
