1 CONT An outstanding citizen, Dr. Loveless for the past 35 years had served 
1 CONC this community both as a physician and as a leader in all civic 
1 CONC enterprises.  He was an examining officer for the selective service 
1 CONC boards in both world wars.  For a number of years in the 1920's, he 
1 CONC served as county health officer.  He was mayor of the village (Granville) 
1 CONC for three successive terms and at the time of his death was serving his 
1 CONC fourth term after an interval of two years.  He was an active member of 
1 CONC the Methodist church, with which he had been affiliated since childhood. 
1 CONC He was a member of Granville post, American Legion, of the Masonic lodge, 
1 CONC and the Knights of Pythias.  He served for many years on the board of the 
1 CONC Granville public library and the Granville fire department.  He was 
1 CONC affiliated with the Ohio State Medical society and had served as 
1 CONC president of the Licking County Medical association.  He was active in 
1 CONC the work of the Granville Business Men's association and was vice 
1 CONC president and director of the Peoples State bank of Granville; from the 
1 CONC time of its organization in 1924.  Through these many activities he had 
1 CONC built himself into the very structure of his community.

1 CONT Brother Loveless was stricken with a heart attack shortly after he arose 
1 CONC and dressed, morning of May 6.  He was removed from his home to Newark 
1 CONC City Hospital, where in the afternoon he passed away.  Although in 
1 CONC failing health for more than a year he was able to call on patients in 
1 CONC their homes during the day, with office hours in his home.  In addition 
1 CONC to serving the community, he was an examining officer for the Selective 
1 CONC Service Board No. 3 in Granville, where (as in World War I) hundreds of 
1 CONC young men were examined for physical fitness for service in World War I 
1 CONC and II.  At the time of death he was serving his fourth term as Mayor; 
1 CONC was vice president of the Peoples State Bank; member of County and State 
1 CONC Medical Societies; member of the Business Men's Association; Methodist 
1 CONC church; Masonic and K. P. orders.  Clyde Loveless, son of John H. and 
1 CONC Rebecca Powell Loveless, was born at Bakersville (Coshocton County) Dec. 
1 CONC 26, 1871; graduated from Hanover High school and for several years taught 
1 CONC in rural schools.  His college career began as a student in O.W.U.; in 
1 CONC 1902 received an M.D. degree in the Ohio Medical University (OSU); 
1 CONC engaged in the practice of medicine at Perryton from 1902 to 1911, the 
1 CONC year he came to Granville.  In 1897 he married Miss Laura Norris, who 
1 CONC preceded him in death in 1927.  Survived by son, Forrest Loveless and 2 
1 CONC grandchildren all of Columbus, and in Frazeysburg by brother, Wilbur and 
1 CONC sister Harriet Loveless.  Funeral services in the Methodist church were 
1 CONC conducted by Pastor, Dr. Markie, assisted by Rev. Kenneth Maxwell, and 
1 CONC burial was made in Maple Grove.

1 CONT He owned the old brick home on the corner of Broadway and North Pearl 
1 CONC Street (now the site of the Granville Inn's parking lot).  He was 
1 CONC president of the Licking County Medical Society in 1919 or 1920.  He was 
1 CONC a student at Ohio Wesleyan University and received his medical degree in 
1 CONC 1902 from Ohio State University.

1 CONT Oct. 6, 1922 was the 25th anniversary of the marriage of Bro. and Mrs. C. 
1 CONC J. Loveless.  The occasion was taken advantage of by many friends and 
1 CONC neighbors, who planned a surprise for them.  Bro. and Mrs. Loveless were 
1 CONC recipients of several choice pieces of silverware and flowers, and the 
1 CONC well-filled baskets of edibles, which all enjoyed, made an evening long 
1 CONC to be remembered.

1 CONC Commissioner of Licking county.

1 CONT Clyde John graduated from high school, taught school six years, attended 
1 CONC Scio college and Ohio Wesleyan university at Delaware; in 1898 entered 
1 CONC Ohio Medical university, where he graduated with the degree of MD in 
1 CONC 1902.  Clyde John and his family now live in Granville, where the doctor 
1 CONC has an extensive practice, and has a reputation for honest, square 
1 CONC dealing and is considered an expert diagnostician.  He is surgeon to the 
1 CONC local exemption board for Licking county.

1 CONT The grandmother of a fireman in Granville remembered Dr. Loveless and 
1 CONC said that he delivered her babies.  She said she cried more at his 
1 CONC funeral than for members of her own family because he was so loved. (1994)

1 CONC remembers him smoking big cigars. (1994)

1 CONT I knew both your father and your aunt, Bobbie
1 CONT Jean, very well when I was between 8 and 15 years old.  For several
1 CONT years in the early 1940s Forrest and Harriet used to stay at the Beta
1 CONT house for two or three weeks during the summer.  During that time they
1 CONT usually rented a pony and Bobbie Jean, Jack and I had great fun riding
1 CONT it around the Denison campus.
1 CONT     I was just looking at my Maple Grove Cemetery burial list and assume
1 CONT that John Edgar was your father; I always knew him as Jack but don't
1 CONT remember ever seeing him after our pony riding days.  Is your
1 CONT grandmother (Harriet) still living?
1 CONT     C. J.s house never was a fraternity house.  After he died, it was
1 CONT owned by a retired Baptist missionary, Zoe Brown, and his wife who lived
1 CONT there for a few years and by the Catholic Diocese which founded the
1 CONT Church of Saint Edward the Confessor there.  I'm not sure whether the
1 CONT church or Zoe was there last, but eventually it was rented to college
1 CONT age kids who made a mess of the place until it was purchased by the
1 CONT owners of the Granville Inn and torn down in the 1970s.  I should be
1 CONT able to come up with a picture.  If and when I'll let you know.

1 CONT I'd sure like to see the one of the kids on the pony also.  I think
1 CONT there's a good chance that the third one is me although I wasn't the
1 CONT only one in the neighborhood who was attracted to that little four
1 CONT legged critter.
1 CONT     I can't remember C. J. ever smoking cigars, but I can't say that he
1 CONT didn't.  I remember him giving me shots for hay fever twice a week
1 CONT during ragweed season.  I would stop at the office sometime in the
1 CONT afternoon; more times than not there wouldn't be any other patients
1 CONT waiting, and Miss Wolf would answer the bell when I rang.
1 CONT     When I was less than six years old I couldn't understand why I
1 CONT caught so much hell for picking up a bunch of old medicine bottles that
1 CONT he had put out in his trash barrel which was located in a space less
1 CONT than three feet wide between his garage and the stone wall around the
1 CONT Granville Inn.  I think he was a little more careful how he got rid of
1 CONT those bottles after that incident.
1 CONT     On several occasions my father told me that the bill with Dr.
1 CONT Loveless for family medical attention was settled each year for $50 or
1 CONT less.  He printed all of the doctor's statements, letterheads and pill
1 CONT envelopes so they just exchanged services.  C. J. also was mayor of
1 CONT Granville for several terms.

1 CONT Scores of friends gathered Wednesday afternoon at the Loveless home on 
1 CONC Broadway to pay last respects to the memory of Mrs. Laura Norris 
1 CONC Loveless, wife of Dr. C. J. Loveless, who died Sunday night in Grant 
1 CONC Hospital, Columbus.
1 CONT Rev. A. J. Hawke, pastor of the Neale Ave. Methodist Episcopal Church, 
1 CONC Newark, was in charge of the services.  Friends filed past the bier from 
1 CONC 2 p.m. until the hour of the services in a continuous line, and the 
1 CONC funeral cortege which went to the cemetery extended from the gates of 
1 CONC Maple Grove to Broadway.
1 CONT Mrs. Loveless was stricken suddenly, Saturday at noon, while having 
1 CONC luncheon with friends in a Columbus tea room.  X-ray examination made 
1 CONC after she had been rushed to the hospital showed that a small foreign 
1 CONC object had lodged in her throat and also that she had been suffering from 
1 CONC a form of throat trouble.
1 CONT Mrs. H. R. Hundley was with Mrs. Loveless at the time she was stricken.  
1 CONC Mrs. Loveless was first taken to Mount Carmel Hospital and later to the 
1 CONC office of Dr. Charles F. Bowen for an X-ray, after which she was removed 
1 CONC to Grant Hospital.
1 CONT Mrs. Loveless was 52 years of age and was born and reared at Frazeysburg, 
1 CONC where her father, John Norris, 81 years old, still resides. She was a 
1 CONC faithful member ot the M.E. church and was active in community welfare 
1 CONC work.  She was a charter member of the Women's Music Club and was an 
1 CONC executive committee member of the Women's Federation.  She was a member 
1 CONC of the D.A.R., Eastern Star and the Travelers Club.
1 CONT She is survived by her husband Dr. C. J. Loveless, county health 
1 CONC commissioner, and one son, Forrest Loveless, 295 Marshall Avenue, 
1 CONC Columbus.
1 CONT Members of the family, who arrived from out of town to attend the funeral 
1 CONC were her son Forrest Loveless of Columbus and his wife, her 
1 CONC brother-in-law and sister Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Kessell of Pittsburgh, Pa.;

1 CONT John H. Loveless was a charter member of the Lodge of the Knights of 
1 CONC Pythias #79; organized December 7, 1874.  It was the only lodge of that 
1 CONC order existing in the county.  John was the Master of Exchequer for the 
1 CONC lodge.

1 CONT John was born near Bakersville, OH.  He inherited the musical talent of 
1 CONC his mother, becoming a very efficient musician.  August 13, 1862, he 
1 CONC enlisted in the 122nd O.V.I. (Ohio Volunteer Infantry) and was soon 
1 CONC hurried to the front.  The 122nd was in 20 battles, among which were The 
1 CONC Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Charleston and Appamatox, where Lee 
1 CONC surrendered to Grant.  His regiment was mustered out at Washington, DC, 
1 CONC June 26, 1865, where only 605 of the original 975 were there to answer 
1 CONC the last roll call.  After his marriage, he engaged in the mercantile 
1 CONC business at Bakersville for thirteen years, where his four children were 
1 CONC born.  In 1883 he moved to Licking county, OH, and located on a large 
1 CONC farm where he now resides.  John H. Loveless is of fine stature, a 
1 CONC republican, a zealous Methodist, a loving father, and of a cheerful, 
1 CONC modest, contented disposition.

1 CONT Harriet's schooling was somewhat handicapped in her younger days by ill 
1 CONC health, but her talented mother aided her, and the writer knows her to be 
1 CONC a great student, and does not hesitate to say that she is more than 
1 CONC ordinarily well versed in literature, and has been an able assistant in 
1 CONC his work, particularly on the Loveless branch of this history.  She has 
1 CONC inherited no little amount of the musical talent of her ancestors, and at 
1 CONC one time took up the study of music and had builded much on a musical 
1 CONC career, but the illness and death of her dear mother changed her plans, 
1 CONC leaving all the home responsibilities on her, which she has so 
1 CONC unselfishly carried.  I have never met her, but in the many letters I 
1 CONC have had from her, I can plainly see her refined, cultured, beautiful and 
1 CONC noble character, and I predict, yet, a bright future for her.

1 CONT Also, when visiting with John Powell and his wife in Bakersville, he told 
1 CONC me that, as a child, he had heard a story about a car hitting Wilbur and 
1 CONC Hattie's front porch on Main Street.  Even though he lived miles away, it

1 CONT Leonard (Hawk - see Margaret Ellen, Stephen's daughter) come (sic) to the 
1 CONC township in 1827, at the same time his brother John settled in the 
1 CONC Stonecreek Valley.  The land which he settled was a wilderness, but at 
1 CONC about the same time Stephen H. Loveless and Archibald Leech settled 
1 CONC adjacent to Leonard's homestead.
1 CONT From here on we will quote a history lent to me by Bud Hawk, original 
1 CONC author unknown.
1 CONT There were scarcely any settlers in the Bakersville area when Leonard 
1 CONC Hawk arrived there.  There were a few early neighbors, the Loveless, 
1 CONC Leech, Powell, McFarland, Corbet, and Walters families.  Later the Nead, 
1 CONC DeCamp, and Mizer families moved in.  The Powells were English with 
1 CONC titled nobility in their background.

1 CONC to feed them and there never was any trouble.

1 CONT Per Joanne Nance:  Public records indicate that the presence of the 
1 CONC Lovelace family in Halifax County has persisted for well over 200 years. 
1 CONC As early as 1772 the names John and Thomas Lovelace apprear together on 
1 CONC certain deeds and in several court cases.  Then in 1786, a William 
1 CONC Lovelace became the first of the name to marry in the county.
1 CONT It is believed that John and Thomas were brothers, and that William, 
1 CONC named for another brother, was a son of John.  This belief is based on 
1 CONC entries found in the Register of North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, 
1 CONC VA which shows four sons born to Charles and Bridget Lovelace:  William 
1 CONC in 1723, Charles Jr. in 1733, John in 1737, and Thomas in 1739.

1 CONT (Oldham) Lovelace gave permission for her daughter Elizabeth to marry 
1 CONT James Collins.  It got written into the marriage record that her 
1 CONT daughter Tabitha Lovelace married James Collins.  She did not.

1 CONT    William Henderson White was born February 22, 1840, the son of Jeremiah
1 CONT White and Elizabeth  LOVELACE of Meadsville, in Halifax Co., VA. The White
1 CONT family owned a tobacco farm and business.
1 CONT    William enlisted in the Confederate States Army on April, 29, 1861.
1 CONT Company H of the 14th Virginia Infantry were known as the Meadsville Greys
1 CONT under Captain Richard Logan Jr. The Company H of the 14th Virginia 
1 CONC Infantry
1 CONT served the South in the Civil War in the Virginia campaign under General
1 CONT Robert E. Lee, the commanding officer of the Army of Northern Virginia.
1 CONT    The Virginia campaigns consisted of the Battle of Seven Pines, the 
1 CONC Battle
1 CONT of Hill, the Battle of the Second Manassas, the Battle of Gettysburg and 
1 CONC the
1 CONT Battle of Chester Station. At the Battle of Gettysburg, Company H of the
1 CONT 14th Virginia Infantry were part of General Lewis Armistead's Brigade and
1 CONT General George Pickett's Division, participating in one of the most famous
1 CONT charges in one of the greatest battles in war history.
1 CONT    First Sergeant William H. White was captured near Petersburg, VA on May
1 CONT 10, 1864, transported to Point Lookout, Maryland, and recieved at Elmira
1 CONT Prison Camp in New York on August 17, 1864. He was paroled March 2, 1865,
1 CONT and was sent to the James River for exchange. The Company H of the 14th
1 CONT Virginia Infantry surrendered at Appomatox, Virginia, April 6, 1865.
1 CONT    William returned home after the war and married Virginai Vaden on 
1 CONC October
1 CONT 22, 1868, at Meadsville. The couple soon moved to Tennessee, first 
1 CONC settling
1 CONT briefly in Carroll County, then moving southeast of Trenton to the Eldad
1 CONT Community.
1 CONT    William was a farmer and in 1880 took the job as superintendent of the
1 CONT Gibson County Poor House (or county farm). He remained on the job 16 
1 CONC years.
1 CONT The Whites had five children: John L. Sr., George, Ruppert, Anne and 
1 CONC Sallie
1 CONT Bett. They were members of the Eldad Baptist Church more than 25 years.
1 CONT    William Hamilton White died on May 14, 1909, followed by Virginia
1 CONT "Nannie" on December 20, 1924. Both were buried at Eldad Cemetery, located
1 CONT off Gibson Road on the Eldad Road.

1 CONC in Rockingham.  I have found a Samuel Lovelace in Port Tobacco, Charles

1 CONC listed in an every name index.  I have also found a record of a Samuel

1 CONC (Lovell) Morgan, natives of Muhlenburgh County, Ky. William K. was the 
1 CONC son of John Morgan, who married Jane Irvin. John Morgan was born and 
1 CONC reared in Culpeper County, Va., was of Welsh and Irish descent; was a 
1 CONC major in Hopkins' campaign; was a member of the legislature from 
1 CONC Muhlenburgh County, in 1805-1806. The mother of our subject was the 
1 CONC daughter of Michael Lovell, who married a Miss Ingram of English descent; 
1 CONC Michael was a farmer, a native of Maryland; his wife was a native of 
1 CONC Virginia. Thomas M. was reared on a farm, and attended the common schools 
1 CONC when not engaged in the duties incident to farm life; he became of age; 
1 CONC was elected constable in the spring of 1862, and filled the position six 
1 CONC years; in 1868, was elected sheriff of the county; collected the first 
1 CONC railroad tax in the county; and served as deputy sheriff one term. In 
1 CONC December, 1875, he engaged in the dry goods and grocery business in 
1 CONC Greenville, which he still follows; has during the time been engaged in 
1 CONC the manufacture of tobacco. He owns two farms of 270 acres, also a 
1 CONC residence and store in Greenville. Mr. Morgan married February 9, 1871, 
1 CONC Mary B. Martin of Muhlenburgh County, the daughter of Capt. W. W. Martin 
1 CONC and Mary (Lovelace) Martin, natives of Muhlenburgh County, and of English 
1 CONC and Irish descent, respectively. W. W. Martin was the son of Hutson 
1 CONC Martin, who married Anna Lockridge, natives of Virginia and Tennessee, 
1 CONC respectively, and of English and Irish descent. Hutson Martin was one of 
1 CONC the first sheriffs of Muhlenburgh County. To Mr. and Mrs. Morgan were 
1 CONC born four children: Willie E., Anna L., Columbus B. and Mary C. He and 
1 CONC wife are Cumberland Presbyterians, and he is a member of the F.& A.M. and

1 CONT My father is Fielden Franklin Lovelace, born (Fielden Roosevelt) in Rugby,
1 CONT VA 11 Jan, 1935 (which is now part of Mt. Rogers State Park at Mouth of
1 CONT Wilson, Grayson Co.). His father was Basil Edgar Lovelace, born in Grant,
1 CONT VA  24 Dec,1890, who married Zuria Glenna Farmer 13 July 1919. His father
1 CONT was William Wise Lovelace, supposedly born in England. When Basil was 3
1 CONT months old Wm. Wise ran off to Weiser, ID (according to my Aunt Virgie),
1 CONT where he had a son named Sylvester. My father's brother Ed went off to
1 CONT Baker, OR and somewhere along the line one branch supposedly went to 
1 CONC Alaska
1 CONT to homestead.
1 CONT I've just started researching my roots and Wm. Wise is proving to be a 
1 CONC hard
1 CONT one to track down so far....I've been told he was one of seven brothers
1 CONT granted land in Wilkes Co., NC.. but then my Aunt says that there were

1 CONT 4 brothers, one was Wm. Wise, settled in Grant, VA, one was named Charlie,
1 CONT she didn't remember the names of the others, but one was settled in Grassy
1 CONT Creek, NC, one in OH, and one in TX. Supposedly my dad's cousin Pearl
1 CONT Emerson had a book on the life and times of my branch of the LOVELACEs,

1 CONT she is now dead and I don't know where her children are.

1 CONT Grandpa was eleven years old.  I assume that was when they decided to move
1 CONT to MO.  Also, Grandma told me that it was Grandpa's ambition to give each

1 CONT his children a farm.  When he had eight children he had eight farms.
1 CONT However he got sick and for a year or more couldn't look after his
1 CONT businesses and they suffered, resulting in fewer farms and more children.

1 CONT From Marjorie Dohr, 1994;  There is a little bit of human interest that I
1 CONT can give you.  Grandpa (James P. Lovelace) built a large 10 room house on
1 CONT the Des Arc farm.  I remember a house with porches on both floors in the
1 CONT front.  Grandma told me that my father was the first baby born in the 
1 CONC house.
