Joseph Aucoin1
M, #29819, b. circa 1744
| Note* | | Joseph Aucoin Joseph, elder son of Alexis Aucoin, fils and Hélène Blanchard, was born probably at Cobeguit in c1744. He and his parents escaped to Île St.-Jean in the early 1750s, but the British deported them to France in late 1758. His father and three siblings died from the ordeal. Joseph, his three remaining siblings, and his widowed mother lived at Ploubalay, near St.-Malo, from 1759 to 1760, and then at nearby St.-Coulomb from 1761 to 1763. Joseph married Marie-Josèphe, daughter of fellow Acadian Jean Hébert, at Ploubalay in March 1764. They had 10 children in France between 1765 and 1780--eight sons and two daughters, most of whom died in childhood. Neither of their daughters survived. Marie-Josèphe died at Villou, near St.-Malo, in June 1781; she was only 37 years old. Joseph, still a widower, sailed to Louisiana aboard La Ville d'Archangel, the sixth of the Seven Ships, with four sons. They followed the majority of their fellow passengers to Bayou des Écores, north of Baton Rouge. Joseph remarried to cousin Marie, daughter of Jean-Baptiste Aucoin, at Bayou des Écores in May 1788. Marie gave him more children, including two sons. After the Acadians abandoned Bayou des Écores in the early 1790s, they moved on to upper Bayou Lafourche, though Joseph appears in no censuses there; he may have died on the river. Four of his six sons created families of their own. His grandsons settled not only in Assumption but also in Lafourche Interior and Terrebonne parishes.2 |
