Renee Marie Breaux
F, #2003, b. circa 1616, d. before 1678
Note* | Renee Marie Breaux BREAU (BRAULT, BRO, BROT) RENEE BREAU. Explanatory Note G. Massignon A Vincent Breau was the godfather of Madeleine Brun, daughter of Vincent and Vincende (sic for Renee) Breau (Rg La Chaussee [Poitou] 25 Jan 1645). This was probably the same Vincent Breau who follows. Explanatory Note S.A. White Even if Madeleine Brun's godfather were the same Vincent Breau who started the family of that name in Acadia, this same Vincent could not have been Vincent Brun's wife's brother. In the record of the marriage of Renee Breau's great-grandson Honore Gautrot to Vincent Breau's granddaughter Jeanne Lebert (Rg Plouer 28 J an 1761), there is no dispensation for kindred (although there is one for affinity). Andre Bernard
M, #2010, b. circa 1620
Occupation* | Andre Bernard was Stone Mason, Bricklayer.
Story* | Source: The Acadian Odyssey [2010] André Bernard, a mason, from Beauvais sur Mer (Poitou) is in Acadia by 1645. He is definitely the first by that name to settle in the area..1
Note* | He In a message dated 6/5/00 6:53:59 AM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > I have as Andree's 1st marriage a Mr. Bernard, D before 1651. > I am showing for his parents, Andre Bernard and Marie Gautrot. ======= I have the following information on the bernard family. I have not researched it extensively, but would like to have what I have confirmed or corrected. Don Landry [email protected] BERNARD ~ ~ ~ BERNARD ? from the Germanic "bern" (bear) plus "hard" strong. In referance to the name BERNARD. Rev. Clarence J. d'Entremont states in the Acadian Genealogy Exchange newsletter, Vol XVII no. 2, pp. 36?37: "The first time that the name Bernard is mentioned in Acadia is in the census of Port Royal in 1678, where Marie Bernard is listed as the wife of René Landry (Arch. des Col., Serie E. Dos. pers., carton 277, ff 17?20v). She was born about 1644?1645, and her first child was born about 1660?61. Jeanne Bernard, first wife of Guion Chasson, called Lavallee, was also born about 1644?45; according to the records that we have, their first child, Gabriel, was born about 1667. In the census of 1693, we find at Beaubassin René Bernard, who is considered the ancestor of the Bernard family in Acadia. Born about 1663, he married Madeleine Doucet. And in the same census, we find at St. John River Nicholas Bernard, married to Marguerite, probably an Indian girl." ANDRE BERNARD, 1620 According to Clarence Breaux, André Bernard, a stone mason, arrived in Acadia in 1641 to work on the property of Charles de Latour, at Jemseg, at the mouth of the Riviere St. Jean. Following the capture of the fort at Jemseg on April 17, 1645 by Charles de Menou de Charnisay, Seigneur D'Aulnay, Governor of Acadia, several; of Latour's companions, having been taken prisoner, were hanged, after Council deliberation, as an example to the others in the rebellion. André Bernard was spared and signed an attestation to the fact on 15 May 1645. Along with the others from Jemseg, he returned to France, via New York. About 1650, following the rehabilitation of Latour by the monarchy, André returned to Acadia. He is beleived to have had at least two children born in Acadia: 1. Nicholas, born in 1662, married about 1690 to Marguerite, an Indian. 2. René, born in 1663 and married about 1689 to Madeleine Doucet. René Bernard died before 1704. Following is what appears in Bona Arcenmault's "HISTOIRE ET GENEALOGIE DES ACADIANS", vol 2 ? p. 428?429: ANDRE BERNARD, né vers 1620, maçon, orginaire de Beauvoir?sur? André Bernard was born c 1620 in Beauvoir sur Mer, Vendee, France and died before 1651 in France. André arrived in Acadia in 1641 as a "macon", brick layer or builder; a stone mason. According to Arcenault, he came in the service of Charles de Latour to serve on "l'habitation" or house of Latour at Jemseg on the St. Jean River in New Brunswick. Arsenault stated that after taking of the fort at Jemseg by Aulnay in 1645, many of Latour's companions were made prisoner and hung to serve as an example for posterity of an ostinate rebellion, . And André was spared and signed an oath. Arsenault reports that André returned to France by way of New York, intending to return rehabilitation to Latour. However, Marie Andrée married Antoine Belveau c 1651 and she travelled to Acadia with him and her two Bernard daughters. She had two additioal children, Magdeleine and Jean Beliveau. Also the following is from professor White: MARIE BERNARD ( ???????? (1) & Andrée Guyon) n v 1645; s Rg 11 Janv 1719.(S.A. White "Dictionaire généalogique des families acadiennes, partie I (1636?1714) v 1659 (in progress) Mrs Josephine Landrey who has studied René Landry, the younger family reports that André was pardoned because he agreed to be the hangman for Latour when the fort fell.Andrée Guion n probably c 1615 in France d. after 1686 census arrived in Acadia in 1614 , returned to France c 1645 returned to Acadia c1651?4 Marie Andrée Guion, 1615 "The mother of Marie and Jeanne Bernard was Andrée Guyon, born about 1615?16. We do not know when André Bernard was born, the one who was hired by Charles de LaTour in 1641, and who acted as executioner of those who were hanged at Fort Sainte?Marie on St, John River in 1645. He could very well have been the first husband of Andrée Guyon, who in 1641 was about twenty five, and the father of Marie and Jeanne Bernard. He could not, however, have been the father of Nicholas Bernard, born about 1662, nor of René Bernard, born about 1663, because Andrée Guyon married Antoine Belliveau about 1651. Father Archange Godbout offers arguments to prove that Jeanne Bernard lost her father shortly after she was born. He also offers arguments to show that René Bernard was not related to Marie and Jeanne Bernard (ref. "Histoire du Cape Sable", vol 2, pp. 601?2 ) also (AGE vol. XVII 1988 p. 36) According to Clarence Breaux, Marie BERNARD's mother Marie Andrée Guion, born 1615 was married to (first name unknown) BERNARD sometime before 1643 and "came to Acadie with this husband. After his death, she married about 1651 Antoine BELLIVEAU. From her first husband she had two known children; a. Jeanne BERNARD born about 1643; married about 1666 Guyon CHIASSON dit LAVALLEER; died before 1683. b. Marie BERNARD born about 1645 in Acadie; married about 1659 René LANDRY; died 11 January 1719 at Port Royal." Marie Bernard is listed in the 1671 census as being 61 years of age (thus being born in 1610). But the census of 1686, in which she is registered by herself, she gives her age as 86 years thus being born in 1600). The 1714 census shows Marie as Widow BERNARD living next to her son Charles LANDRY. René and Marie produced fifteen children, all born at Port Royal.".... (Father Clarence d'Entremont) Evidence of Marie Bernard still living in 1718 On April 1, 1718, Marie Bernard, widow of René Landry, baptised a baby "because of the danger in transporting the infant." ?
