Note* Sylvain Sonnier MULTIPLE SYLVAIN SONNIERS In the early years of the Acadians in Louisiana, there were a number of Sylvain Sonniers which has caused some confusion. Using church records and census data, I have come up with the following relationships and would appreciate any additions or corrections to the material. The first Sylvain Sonnier (Saulnier in Acadia and in early Louisiana) came to Louisiana with Joseph Broussard, arriving in February 1765 and settling in Opelousas. He was a bachelor as he and his future wife, Madeleine BOURG, were listed in separate locations in the 25 April 1766 census. Sylvain I (Etienne/Jeanne Comeau) was born ca. 1738 (census data) and died 25 January 1801 in Opelousas (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1B p. 663). He married Madeleine BOURG (Charles/Anne Boudrot) between 25 April 1766 census and 1768 because in the 1771 census they are listed with a daughter age 3 (Church records of this period have been lost). Madeleine BOURG was born 4 January 1744 in Tracadie, Ile St. Jean. She died 30 May 1814 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2A p. 122). They had 10 children, one of which was Sylvain II. Silvain (SONNIER) (Silvain & Magdelene Bourque) bn. 6 Feb. 1771 (PCP-2, part 2, 106a) (DOBR Records v. 2 p. 679) Sylvain II (Sylvain I/Madeleine Bourg) died 28 September 1829 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2C p. 708). Previously, he had filed a Succession (will) dated October 1821 listing his four sons by his first marriage (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2B p. 861). This sometimes causes confusion about his death date. Silvain II appears in the 1810 and 1820 census. Sylvain II married first on 19 May 1789 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1A p. 723) Emilie (Humilde) Comeaux (Charles/Anastasie Savoy). Emilie was born ca. 1773 (census data) and was buried 20 February 1801 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1B p. 188). They had 4 (maybe 5?) children including: SONNIER, Silvain (Silvain el hijo & Emilie Comaux) b. 1 April 1789, bt. Thursday, 25 Dec. 1794 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-A, p. 126) However, also listed is: SONNIER, Silvain (Silvain Sogne el hijo) bur. Saturday, 2 Jan. 1796 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1, p. 723) Since there are numerous later church records for a Sylvain Sonnier, son of Sylvain & Emilie Comeaux and a Sylvain is listed in the Succession dated October 1821, maybe, as often was the custom when a child died, the next child born was given the same name. Before going on with Silvain III (Silvain II/Emilie Comeau), it is necessary to look at the second marriage of Silvain II. Emilie Comeau was buried 20 February 1801 and on 10 December 1802, Silvain II married Judith Bello (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1B, p. 663). Judith Bello (Donat/Suzanne Moreau) was born 29 January 1777 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1A p. 45) and was buried 4 February 1817 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2A p. 49). Prior to her marriage to Silvain, it would appear Judith had an illegitimate child: BELLO, Josephine (Judith Bello) b. 29 Jan, 1777 (sic), bt. Tuesday, 10 Sep. 1799 Spons: Joseph Moreau, her uncle & Suzanne Moreau, her maternal grandmother. (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1-A p. 45). The 1777 date is in error and should be 1797 as it clearly states Suzanne Moreau, mother of Judith Moreau Bello (born in 1777), is the grandmother of Josephine. This error has caused some researchers to believe Judith and Josephine are the same person. Other sources indicate the father of Josephine may have been Joseph Poire. Now back to the marriage of Silvain II and Judith Bello. In Hebert SWLA Records v. 1B p. 663 is found: SONNIER, Silvain- a widower of this post (dec. Silvain & Magdeleine Bourg) m. 10 Dec. 1802 Judith Bello- also single, native and living in this post (Donato & Susanne Moreau), Declare a son of 3 months of age. It would seem Judith was unmarried and had another child out of wedlock. Remember she also brought her daughter Josephine (age 3) to this wedding. Now on to Silvain III. Silvain III, born 1 April 1789 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1A p. 723) or ca, 1798 if there were two (see above). His Succession was dated October 1851. He appeared in the census of 1820 and 1830. There are three interesting entries in the church records concerning Silvain III and Josephine Bello (who grew up together): BELLO, Emilie (Josephine & from what they told me, Sylvain Saunier fils from here) b. in January 1814, bt. 18 June 1817 Pats: Sylvain Saunier & Emilie Comeau from here; Mats: Donato Bello from Italy & Suzanne Moro from Mobile (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2A p. 48). BELLO, Judic (Josephine Bello & from what they have told me, Sylvain Saunier fils from here) b. in Jan, 1814, bt. 18 June 1817 Pats: Sylvain Saunier & Emilie Comau from here; Mats: Donato Bello from Italy and Suzanne Moro (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2A p. 49). Shortly after the 18 June 1817 baptisms of Emilie and Judic, Silvain III and Josephine Bello must have married because their next child appears in the church records as: SONNIER, Sylvain (Sylvain fils & Josephine Poire from here) b. 11 Feb. 1818, bt 7 Jul 1818. Pats: Sylvain Saunier & Emile Comau from here Mats: Joseph Poire & Judic Bello from here (Herbert SWLA Records v. 2A p. 878). This is the source for Joseph Poire being the father of Josephine. Silvain III and Josephine Bello had 6 children including: Silvain IV, b. 11 February 1818 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2A p. 878) married first 10 January 1837 Marie Louise Sonnier (Louis/Denise Carrierre) born 3 November 1819 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2B p. 860). I have done no further research on this Silvain. There were two other Silvains in early Louisiana of which I am aware. Charles Sonnier (Silvain I/Madeleine Bourg) bpt. 26 April 1781 at 4 1/2 months (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1A p. 719) married ca 1804 Sophie Bello (Donat/Suzanne Moreau) b. 16 May 1784 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1A p. 45). (Sophie was a sister of Judith Bello). They had at least 4 children including: SONNIER, Silvain (Charles Soigne & Sophie Bello) b. 30 Dec. 1807, bt. 15 July 1819 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1B p. 663) He would be a cousin of Silvain II. Louis Sonnier (Silvain II/Emilie Comeau) b. 3 August 1797 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 1A p. 721) married 20 February 1816 (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2 A p. 876) Denise Carrierre (Pierre & Marie Louise Vivarene). They had at least 8 children including: SONNIER, Sylven (Louis Sogne & Denise Carrierre) b. 12 Feb. 1822, bt. 12 March 1822 Pats: Sylven Soigne & Emile Comeau Mats: Pierre Carriere & Marie Louise Vivaret. (Hebert SWLA Records v. 2B p. 861). He would be a cousin of Silvain III. Hope this helps in keeping the Silvain Sonniers and their relationships with the Bellos straight. Roger A. Rozendal [email protected].
