Story* Notes on: Michel Richard dit Sansoucy
(RN=1174). Originally fromSaintonge. (CBL.980) Michel arrived in Acadie about 1652 withthe expedition of Emmanuel LeBorgne and of Guilbault, or in 1651with Sieur de Saint-Mas, representative of LeBorgne. He was a soldier in the garrison at the fort in Port Royal. In the 1671census he is listed as a 41 year old plowman with fourteen arpents of cleared land. After Madeleine's death, Michel married about 1683 Jeanne Babin. Michel and Madeleine had ten children, all born at Port Royal.

Story* Notes on: Pierre I Comeau

(CBL.676) Pierre first came to Acadie in 1632 with the expedition of De Razilly and he helped
found the Port of La Heve River. In 1635 at De Razilly's death, he went with the new Governor,
Charles de Menou de Charnisay, Seigneur d'Aulnay, to rebuild the fort at Port Royal, the
original fort having been destroyed by the English in 1613. However he returned to France and
did not emigrate to Acadie until about 1656. In the 1671 census of Port Royal he is listed as
having six arpents of cleared land; in the 1678 census he is listed as a widower.
Pierre was a Cooper by trade.
Pierre and Rose were the parents of nine known children.

[1182] Pierre Commeaux was registered at Port Royal (today Annapolis Royal) in 1671, he
was 75 years old at the time and was a barrel maker by trade.

We are now in Port-Royal, Acadia. The year, 1632. The country is back in French hands after the treaty of St-Germain-en-Lay. This time real effort will be made to colonise this country. In the same year Sieur de Razilly brought with him 300 men to prepare the land. The names of some are still present in the Acadian population, while others went back to France at the expiration of their contract.
In 1636, on the first of April, the ship St-Jehan left La Rochelle for Acadia with 78 passengers aboard. On the passenger list, the only one known to exist for Acadia, we see a number of workers and families, some of them our ancestors like Barbe Bayol, Louis Blanchard and perhaps Nicolas Bayol. Around 1650, at Port-Royal, a Pierre Comeau is known to have married a Rose Bayol, or Bayou. A son, Etienne, is the first born of this couple. Where does Pierre hail from? Not present on the St-Jehan, it's probable that he came over with Razilly in 1632, or perhaps later on another ship, between 1636 and 1650. Many leads direct us toward Burgundy, but the missing link remains elusive.

Due to a lack of documentation, we know very little of Pierre. We learned that the couple had ten children. The Acadian colonists were living close together, along the river, following a sort of communal way of life, with a few families working the same piece of land. In the 1671 census, Etienne, married, was living with his father. The widow Barbe Bayol, Etienne's mother-in-law, was next door and a Pitre son was married to one of Barbe's daughters was also a neighbor. We see Pierre for the last time on the 1686 census. He was 75 years old.

All of Pierre's and Rose's children married and founded a new branches of Comeaus: Etienne with Marie Lefebvre in 1671 and later with Marie Landry in 1694, Pierre dit l'Esturgeon with Jeanne Bourg in 1677, Jean the eldest with Françoise Hebert in 1677 and later with Catherine Joseph in 1720, Pierre dit le Loup-Marin with Jeanne Bourgeois in 1689, Françoise with Jean Gaudet in 1671, Marie with Claude Pitre, Jean Augustin with Catherine Babin in 1686, Marie-Anne with Etienne Rivet in 1677. An unconfirmed report tells us that Antoine moved to France and lived in Bordeaux.1
