Antoinette Landry

Note* Antoinette Landry ANTOINETfE LANDRY.
Explanatory Notes S.A. White
i. The dispensation for the fourth degree ofkindred granted upon the mar-
riage of Antoine Bourg and Antoinette Landry's great-grandson Charles
Belliveau to Rene Landry the elder and Perrine Bourg's great-grand-
daughter Marguerite Granger (Rg GP 3 Nov 1717) shows that
Antoinette and Rene were sister and brother, considering that the
absence of any such dispensations when the great-grandchildren of
Simon Pelletret and Perrine Bourg intermarried with those of Antoine
Bourg and Antoinette Landry eliminates the possibility that Antoine
Bourg and Perrine Bourg were brother and sister. See the explanatory
note about Antoine Bourg and Perrine Bourg accompanying the Bourg
family (between nos 1 and 2).
ii. The lack of any dispensations for kinship in the marriage records of
Antoinette Landry's great-grandson Jean Daigre to Claude a Rene
Landry the younger's daughter Madeleine Landry (Rg GP 6 Nov 1721),
of Pierre a Rene Landry the younger's son Franyois Landry to
Antoinette Landry's great-granddaughter Dorothee Bourg (Rg GP 21
Nov 1731), and of Antoine a Rene Landry the younger's son Joseph
Landry to Dorothee's sister Marie-Josephe Bourg (Rg GP 11 Jan 1745),
indicates that Rene Landry the younger was neither Antoinette's
brother, nor her nephew.1

Antoine Hebert

M, #1054, b. circa 1621, d. after 1686

Story* Notes on: Antoine Hebert

(RN=1054). (CBL.286) Antoine was a Cooper who arrived in Acadie in 1640. In the 1671 census
of Port Royal, he is listed as having six arpents of plowed land in two locations.
Antoine and Genevieve are known to have had at least three children, all born at Port Royal.

The First Acadian HEBERTs

Antoine & Etienne HEBERT

The land of Acadia was owned by France in the 1630's. For years, France wanted to settle the area with its own people. Although they had sent men to start a settlement as early as 1604, no women were sent for over 30 years. In the mid 1630's, France started sending men and women to colonize the land. Among those settlers were two brothers, Antoine and Etienne HEBERT.

When did they get here?
We don't know exactly when they arrived in Acadia. Some have placed the date as 1640. I would place the date closer to 1648, since Antoine's oldest son was born in 1649. Depending on which census (1671/1686) you consult, Antoine was born in 1614 or 1621. He arrived with his wife, Genevieve LEFRANCE (b. 1613 or 1606). His brother, Etienne, was supposedly born about 1630 and married Marie GAUDET around 1650. We do not know exactly where these brothers came from or who their parents were. For a long time, it was thought that their parents were Jacques and Marie JUNEAU of Haye-Descartes of Touraine; but that has been shown to be incorrect.

Brothers - Yes ... Children of Jacques & Marie - No
The misconception began with Father Adrien Bergeron's article entitled "Deux grandes familles acadiennes" [Memoires de la Societe genealogique canadienne-francaise (Vol. VI, No. 8, Oct 1955, pp. 393-394)]. Father Bergeron tried to say that Antoine and Etienne were brothers of a Jacques HEBERT, son of Jacques and Marie JUNEAU. The following year, Father Archange Godbout showed the connection to be incorrect (Vol. VII, No. 2, April 1956, pp. 122-123). An examination of Jacques' (the son) marriage contract showed his name to be HABERT, not HEBERT. Thanks to Steve White for sending me the dates for the these 2 articles. Godbaut's article also shows evidence (derived from marriage dispensations) that Antoine and Etienne were indeed brothers.
Steve White recently sent me a letter in which he said the origin of Acadian HEBERTs can be summed up in one word: unknown.

Where were they from?
It has been said that possibly the brothers were from south of Loudon (LaChaussee, Martaize, etc.), however, since Charles Menou d'Aulnay's family had land in that vicinity. If he recruited settlers from that area, there is a chance that they came from there, but there is no proof of where they (or most other) Acadians came from.
Their descendants
The genealogy of Etienne HEBERT has has seen the most research. Janet Jehn and Purvis Hebert have both published material on his descendants. Antoine, however, has not had his genealogy published as a reference work. What appears on these pages is part of the material that I have put together over the past 10 years. Richard Hebert has recently shared his material with me, and I am in the process of revising these pages.

Dictionnaire genealogique
Mr. White stated that the first section of the Dictionnaire genealogique (covering 1636 to 1714) should be done "in a matter of months." There will be 19 HEBERT families in this first section. The second section (which extends to families whose parents married by the end of 1780) contains another 200 HEBERT families. Of those 200 families, 2 are not related to the Antoine/Etienne lineage and another 19 still do not have links to the main lineage. Thanks to Steve White for providing me with this information.

Constructed Genealogy

• I've put several generations of my HEBERTs on-line. The first 5 generations have been checked so that they correlate to Stephen White's material (Thanks to Richard and Michele for the notes) that will appear in his upcoming Dictionnaire (exceptions).
• It's in outline format, with some notes.
• There is also a register form of the genealogy of the Acadian HÉBERTs on a single page.
• All of this material (plus my own notes) are in the printed version of this website.

Exceptions:
There is one discrepancy that I've left in on purpose. Myself, and every other source I've seen, had Jean Hebert (b. abt. 1704; m. Claire Dugas) as the son of Pierre (b. abt. 1679; m. Jeanne Landry). The latest information from White's notes says that this Jean was the son of Jean (b. abt. 1681), Pierre's brother. He puts another Jean (m. Isabelle Bourg) as Pierre's son. This switch is attributed to work by P. Gaudet and H. Hebert. Any information on the two Jeans would be appreciated. I've left Jean (b. abt. 1704; m. Claire Dugas) as Pierre's son. When I hear the rationale for the switch, I may correct it.

There are other discrepancies that are in the online data for various reasons. They are:
• Claire HEBERT (b. abt. 1704; m. Antoine HENRY) d/o Jean & Marie Marguerite LANDRY.
White’s data has her between Families 12 & 13. But what family does she belong to?
• Madeleine HEBERT (b. abt. 1727; m. Charles GUEDRY) d/o Jean & Marie Marguerite LANDRY
She is not in White’s data here.
• Paul HEBERT (b. 3/3/1707) s/o Antoine & Jeanne CORPORON
He’s not in White’s data here.
• Jacques HEBERT (b. abt. 1706) s/o Michel & Isabelle PETITPAS
Never married, according to Gaudet. White doesn’t have him here.
• Anne Marie HEBERT (b. abt. 1710; m. Jean ARSENEAU) d/o Jacques & Jeanne GAUTROT
She’s not in this family in White’s data.
• Jean HEBERT (b. about 1704; m. Claire DUGAS) s/o Pierre & Jeanne LANDRY
White has him in another family, as son of Jacques & Jeanne GAUTROT
• Jean HEBERT (b. about 1710; m. Isabelle BOURG) s/o Jacques & Jeanne GAUTROT
White has him in another family; as son of Pierre & Jeanne LANDRY
• Jean HEBERT s/o Joseph & Anne Marie BOUDROT
I have 2 Jeans, married to different women. White’s data only has Jean m. Madeleine BERTRAND. Is it the same Jean (2 wives), or does Jean (m. Anne BOURG) belong elsewhere?
• Anne HEBERT (b. abt. 1719; m. Michel BOURG) d/o Rene & Marie BOUDROT
She is not in this family in White’s data.
• Paul HEBERT (b. abt 1726; m. Margerite LAPIERRE) s/o Rene & Marie BOUDROT
He’s not here in White’s data.

Louisiana: Ecclesiastical records indicate that Etienne LeBlanc's family was in Louisiana in 1765. The family probably settled temporarily in the Attakapas District before moving to Cabannocé. The April 9, 1766, census lists the following persons in Etienne LeBlanc's household: Etienne (43), his wife Elizabeth Boudrot (45), and the following children: Simon (22), Etienne (15), Mathurin (12), Joseph (5), Marguerite (19), Magdelaine (8), and Marie (2). The census also indicates that Simon owned a parcel of land measuring 4 arpents frontage along the right bank of the Mississippi. He had a firearm in his possession. Identified in the September 14, 1769, census of St. Jacques de Cabannocé as a twenty-four-year-old bachelor living alone. He occupied a tract of land with 4 arpents frontage. He owned two cows, five hogs, one sheep, and one musket. Story* Notes for ETIENNE LEBLANC:

The abstract below was taken from Ensemble Encore: Together Again! The Acadian Memorial Archive at http://jaguar.net-connect.net/amemorial/

Given Names: Étienne Surname: LeBlanc Date of Birth: 1/1/1751

Birthplace: Acadia Mother: Élizabeth Boudrot (Boudreaux)

Father: Étienne LeBlanc

Marriage: Married Osite LeBlanc, daughter of Désiré LeBlanc and Marie Madeleine Landry, at St. Jacques de Cabannocé, January 7, 1778. The married record was witnessed by Mathurin LeBlanc and Joseph Landry.

Children: Anne Catherine (born September 25, 1778), Edouard (born June 4, 1780), Anne Céleste (born November 14, 1782), Marceline (born November 25, 1780)), André Étienne (born August 16, 1791; married February 10, 1812), Étienne Privot (born July 22, 1793), Gustave (born October 6, 1795), Manette (probably Nanette, a nickname for Anne) (married July 25, 1808)

The family resided on a parcel of land measuring six arpents frontage on the right bank of the Mississippi River. Etienne LeBlanc owned two firearms. Identified in the September 14, 1769, census of St. Jacques de Cabannocé as a seventeen-year-old member of his widowed mother's household. The January 23, 1770, muster roll of Louis Judice's Militia Company, Cabannocé District, Acadian Coast, indicates that he was a fusilier and a seventeen-year-old bachelor. Identified in the August 1, 1770, census of the right bank of Ascension Parish as a sixteen-year-old member of his widowed mother's household. That household also included the following siblings: Mathurin, 14 years old; Marguerite, 20 years old; Marie Madeleine, 3 years old; and Marie Marthe, 6 years old. Petitioned Governor Luís de Unzaga for a land grant with six arpents frontage contiguous to that of François Duon (Duhon), ca. April 1771. Louis Judice, co-commandant of the Cabannocé District, informed Unzaga on April 22, 1771, that the land had been abandoned by Jean Jeansonne two years earlier. The April 15, 1777, census of the inhabitants of the Ascension Parish of the Lafourche des Chetimachas District indicates that he was a twenty-four-year-old member of his widowed mother's household. On July 27, 1777, at a meeting of all district settlers to discuss the merits of a proposal— presented to the governor by ranchers in other districts—to allow cattle to range freely throughout the year, he joined fifty-three other Lafourche de Chetimachas landowners in signing a petition expressing his opposition to the recommendation "made by people too lazy to make pens big enough to provide pasturage for their herds." On November 21, 1784, LeBlanc is identified in official governmental correspondence as the acting sublieutenant in the Cabannocé militia unit. On March 16, 1793, Paul Breau, sindic for the Cabannocé area, formally complained to the governor about the negligence of Pierre Part and Étienne (Estienne) Leblanc. Both men had ignored the sindic's orders to repair their levees. Alarmed by the daily rise in the Mississippi River, Breau asked the governor to order Part and LeBlanc, who werer evidently absentee landowners, to report to the Cabannocé District immediately and to undertake the necessary repairs. Identified as an Ascension Parish contributor to a fund for the victims of the extremely destructive 1788 New Orleans fire. He appears to have been the Étienne LeBlanc whose military service record was compiled by the Spanish colonial government on June 30, 1792. This service record indicates that it he was thirty-nine-years of age and a native of Louisbourg, Canada. (The birthplace cited in his service record also appears in numerous other Acadian service records. It appears to have been a generic term used by the Spanish scribe for Acadia.) According to the service record, he was married and enjoyed robust health. He became a volunteer in the colonial militia on February 12, 1770; He was promoted to the rank of sergeant-first class on September 10, 1779. He had served in the Cabannocé mliitia for twenty-two years and in the German Coast Disciplined Provincial Militia for four months and nineteen days. He had participated in the Spanish campaigns against Manchac and Baton Rouge (1779) and Mobile (1780). The service record indicates that his his conduct needed improvement. He had demonstrated valor in his military service, but he had also exhibited only average application to duty and poor ability. Ecclesiastical records indicate that he was a resident of Ascension Parish in 1799.
