Story* Notes on: Mathieu D'Amours

(RN=1024) MMPFGPLM. (CBL.256) Mathieu, a military man, arrived in Quebec in 1651 with Jean
de Lauzon, president of the Compagnie des Cents Associes, who had been named Governor of New
France. Mathieu's aunt, Elizabeth, was married to Michel de Lauzon, a relative of the new
Governor. Mathieu was named Major General of the troops shortly after his
arrival and served along the lower reaches of the St. Lawrence River and as far as Riviere St.
Jean in Acadie. In 1653, while living with his father-in-law, Mathieu bought land for farming
at Beaupre, but finding that too far from Quebec City, he exchanged that land in early 1654 for
some at Gaudarville. This land measured about four arpents along the St. Lawrence River at
Cap Rouge by a depth of about twelve arpents. However he did not live there but instead
established himself in the lower part of Quebec City on the street named Sous-le-Fort.
In 1662 he entered the fur trade at Tadoussac. He was elected warden of the church in Quebec,
and 1663 he was named as one of the seven founding members of the Sovereign Council for all of
New France, on which he served until his death.
In 1677 he obtained the Seigneury of Matane, consisting of half a league on the St. Lawrence
River on each side of the Matane River to a depth of one and a half leagues.
