Charles, also called Pierre-Charles, son of Charles Aucoin and Anne-Marie Dupuis, born probably at Grand-Pré in c1747, was a middle-aged bachelor when he came to Louisiana aboard La Bergère, the second of the Seven Ships, with unmarried sister Félicité. His fellow passengers chose him as one of the five onboard leaders of their "expedition." The passenger list also noted that Charles was "well fixed financially." He married Marie-Marguerite, called Marguerite, daughter of fellow Acadian Pierre Noël of Minas and widow of Frenchman Guillaume-Jean Roquemont, at Lafourche in January 1786, soon after they reached the colony on the same ship; Charles was 39 years old at the time of the wedding, and Marguerite was only 22; she had been born at St.-Servan, near St.-Malo, France, in January 1764, soon after her family had been repatriated from England to France. Their daughters married into the Daigle, Hébert, Landry, and LeBlanc families. Charles died at Ascension in January 1805; he was 58 years old. None of his three sons married, so this line of the family, except for its blood, did not survive in the Bayou State. circa 1747.4

i. Guillaume Cyr's daughter Marie's godfather was Pierre "La Pradelle"
(Rg Bbn 19 June 1717). Given that Pierre Hebert's grandson Paul was
nicknamed La Prade (Rc Miquelon 1767) and that the same Pierre
Hebert had resided in the parish of Beau bassin, it would seem that the
nickname La Prade or La Pradelle was connected to this Pierre Hebert.
169
HEBERT (n° 10) I HEBERT (n° 11)
ii. At the time of Pichon's census, taken during the winter of 1754-1755,
Paul Boudrot and his family, as well as old Pierre Hebert and his sons
Jean, Claude, and Paul, were all together at Aulac. It would appear that
Paul Boudrot was there because of the relationship between his wife
and the others. This suggests that she was the same Marie who was
mentioned as Pierre's daughter in the 1714 census.
iii. The godparents of the children of Paul Theriot and Anne Hebert
included Claude Hebert and Marguerite Poirier (Rg Bbn 9 April 1741
& 12 April1746). This appears to be Claude a Pierre Hebert and his
wife. At the time, the only other Claude Hebert, Jean-Emmanuel's son,
was still living at Les Mines. It has thus been concluded that Anne
Hebert must have belonged to Pierre Hebert's family.
iv. In the census of the refugee families in "Acadie franc;aise" in January
1752, there is listed at La Coupe "the old father Hebert a widower,"
followed by Paul Hebert, who came from the Riviere-des-Mines. In
Pichon's census in 1754 or 1755, the "old Pierre Hebert," listed with
Jean Hebert, follows Paul Hebert. The same lists mention as well a
Pierre Hebert dit La Prade, who also came from the Riviere-des-Mines.
The Paul Hebert in question evidently appeared near old Pierre Hebert
on the lists because he was the latter's son.
Explanatory Note A. Godbout
"This Pierre Hebert [the one who married Madeleine Gaudet] would be the
son of Jacques married to Jeanne Gautrot or of Pierre married first to Jeanne
[sic] Landry, secondly to Marie-Josephe Blou, who were both from
Beaubassin. We tend to be inclined towards the latter possibility consider-
ing that he [the older Pierre] was the godfather of the eldest son [of the younger Pierre]."1

i. The dispensation for the second degree of kindred granted upon the
revalidation of the marriage of J oseph- Hilarion Hebert, son of Charles
Hebert and Marguerite LeBlanc, to Anne Hebert, daughter of Pierre
Hebert and Elisabeth Dupuis (Rg Laprairie 6 Oct 1768), proves that
Elisabeth Dupuis's husband was a brother of Marguerite LeBlanc's
husband, and thus that the former was a member of Rene Hebert's
family. Note that this same Joseph-Hilarion Hebert was the godfather
of Mathurin Hebert, son of Charles Hebert and Ursule Forest (Rg
Laprairie 20 Aug 1768).
ii. It is in the deposition at Belle-ile-en-Mer of Pierre Theriot's widow
Marie-Josephe Dupuis that the nickname Groc borne by Madeleine
Dupuis's father-in-law is recorded.
iii. On the list of the Acadians exiled to Connecticut in 1763, Olivier
Hebert, Charles Hebert, Jean-Baptiste Hebert, and Amand Hebert are
all together, and they are followed by Rene Hebert and his wife Marie
Boudrot. It would appear that the first four were all sons of Rene
Hebert. Instead of going up to Canada as the other members of the
family did, Jean-Baptiste and his sister Judith (by then a widow) and
their families headed towards Santo Domingo in 1764. It is only there,
in the registers of Le Mirebalais, that one learns that Jean-Baptiste's
wife was called Euphrosine Dupuis.
