Story* Notes on: Joseph Broussard dit Beausoleil

(RN=312)
(CBH.76, E.36) (Apr 89). Joseph was named Beausoleil because he was born at a place called
Beausoleil near Port Royal. He first settled at Chipoudy (now Hopewell Hill, New Brunswick),
then at Petitcoudiac (now Hillsborough), later at Le Cran (now Stoney Creek), and finally about
1740 at a place inland on the Petitcoudiac River which he called Village des Beausoleils
(present day Boundary Creek, near Moncton, New Brunswick).
At the beginning of 1747 he and several other Acadians were with a detachment of French Canadian
troops under the command of Coulon de Villiers which, during a snowstorm at night,
attacked British troops at Grand Pre, commanded by Arthur Noble, inflicting heavy casualties.
Later that same year, the Governor of Massachusetts declared Joseph and eleven other
Acadians outlaws for having provisioned the French troops. During the years 1749 to 1755 Joseph
was a fur trader for his own account and reported to the French authorities on the movements of
the British. He was friend and ally of the Indians, having learned to speak their language. He
took part in the defense of Fort Beausejour in Jun 1755, but following its fall he
presented himself on 18 Jun before Lt. Col. Robert Monckton to act as mediator in the peace
negotiations between the British and the Indians on condition he be granted amnesty. Monckton
accorded the pardon conditional upon its confirmation by Lieutenant Governor Charles Lawrence.
Apparently such confirmation was never given and a few weeks later Joseph and a number of
other Acadians were taken prisoner by Monckton, These were deported to South Carolina, except
for Joseph, who managed to escape from Fort Lawrence, fled into the woods, lived with the
Indians and became the leader of the French guerrilla sharpshooters whoh harassed the British
forces at Fort Beausejour and Port Royal.
Governor Vaudreuil authorized Joseph to arm a vessel on the Baie Francaise (Bay of Fundy) for
incursions against the British. On 1 Jul 1758 a detachment of British forces attacked the
Acadian guerrillas along the Petitcoudiac River, inflicting casualties. Joseph was wounded in
the ankle and went to Miramichi for treatment by a surgeon there. Following the capture
of Louisbourg shortly thereafter, the British redoubled their campaign against the Acadian
guerrillas, burning their settlements at the mouth of the Miramichi River and along
the Petitcoudiac River, including the Village des Beausoleils. Joseph's vessel was also seized.
Joseph and his men nevertheless continued the struggle, but when they learned of Montcalm's
defeat at Quebec in Sep 1759, most gave up hope. Furthermore, the Acadian refugees, lacking
food and other necessities, faced the coming of another winter. Therefore, Joseph, along with
his brother Alexandre and two other men, went to Fort Cumberland on 16 Nov 1759 as delegates
for several hundred starving Acadian refugees and made their submission to the commandant of the
fort, Colonel J. Frye. Alexandre remained at Fort Cumberland as Hostage while the other
delegates returned to the Acadian refugees. Despite having promised to all surrender at Fort
Cumberland in the spring of 1760, Joseph and several other Acadians preferred to remain in the
woods. They chose the mouth of Burnt Church River, in the Miramichi region, as their refuge.
In Aug 1760 they were harassing the English along the Riviere St. Jean. In the winter of 1761
the French troops at Miramichi, commanded by Grand pre de Niverville, laid down their arms
in accordance with Quebec surrender terms. Joseph then became the commander of the Acadians who
wished to continue the struggle. Captain Roderick Mac Kenzie succeeded in capturing several of
the Acadians in the area of Nipisguit (now Bathurst) and Miramichi, but Joseph escaped into the
interior of the woods. However, he was apparently captured some time later that year or in
thes pring of 1762, since in the summer of 1762 he is listed with his family as prisoners at
Fort Edward in Pisiguit (now Windsor, NovaScotia).
After the Treaty of Peace of 1763 French authorities began efforts to repatriate to France the
Acadian exiles in the British colonies and Acadians remaining in Acadie. In Aug 1763 Joseph was
caught with a copy of a circular letter detailing these efforts. He was brought before the
Governor's Council in Halifax and shortly thereafter jailed. In 1764 a number of
Acadians, including Joseph and his brother Alexandre and their families, desiring to live in
French territory, refused to swear allegiance to the British Government. At the end of Nov they
chartered a vessel to take them from Halifax to Santo Domingo where they remained a short while,
going to New Orleans in the early part of1765.
Joseph and his son Victor were among the eight Acadian heads of families who signed a contract
in New Orleans on 4 Apr 1765 with Captain Bernard D'Autrive to raise cattle in shares in
the Attakapas District, the initial herd to be supplied by D'Autrive. Other partners were
Alexandre Brossard (Joseph's brother) and his son Jean Baptiste, Jean Dugas, Joseph Guilbeau,
Pierre Arceneau and Olivier Thibodeau. Upon Governor Vaudreuil's recommendation to the Spanish
Governor, on 8 Apr 1765 before leaving New Orleans for the Attakapas, Joseph was appointed
"Captain of the Militia and Commandant of the Acadians".
Joseph, his brother Alexandre, Jean Dugas and Joseph Guilbeau all died within a few months after
their arrival in the Attakapas District, apparently during a smallpox epidemic.
From the union of Joseph and Agnes there resulted at least twelve children.

Story* Notes on Pierre Rene Harpin de la Goutrais
Pierre Rene was a French military officer whose service record is under the name of HARPAIN DE LA GAUTRAYE. After training as a Cadet at Rochefort, France, he was sent to the Louisiana Territory in 1737 as an Ensign. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1740 and put in charge of a convoy leaving New Orleans 27 March 1740 for the Illinois Country. On 5 June 1741, at Kaskaskia, he married Celeste Therese NEPVEU and within the next few years the family moved to New Orleans. On 5 March 1746 the Superior Council in New Orleans gave permission for the sale of Nepveuls inherited properties in the Illinois and for the proceeds to be invested in a plantation situated at Chapitoulas (just upriver from New Orleans).

He obtained permission for a trip to France in 1747 to settle family affairs, and returned to Louisiana on the vessel La M6g@re which arrived in New Orleans before the end of May 1748. In the summer of 1748 he conducted a convoy up to the Illinois and made another voyage there in April 1750. In 1754 he reached the rank of Captain. On 2 August 1754 he and his wife sold their plantation. Celeste Therese NEPVEU died before 17118.

Some time before 19 June 1758, either in Biloxi or Mobile, he married Louise Marguerite BELLZAGUY, but within a few years she also was deceased. Prior to August 1763, probably in New Orleans, he took as his third wife the daughter of his next door neighbor, for the August 1763 census of families below New Orleans shows him with wife, three sons, one daughter, and ten slaves on 50 arpents of arable land and 150 arpents of wooded land. This property was at No. 13 on the east bank of the Mississippi River, adjoining that of Antoine BIENVENU (Ancestor 152), his father-in-law. Shortly thereafter he was in Mobile, where on 2 October 1764 he took the oath of allegiance or fidelity to His Brittanic Majesty King George III. The 26 May 1766 census again shows him living below Nev Orleans. Soon thereafter the family moved to-Mobile.
