Obituaries
The Clifton Advocate, Nov. 13, 1931, Front Page
Mrs. Jennie J. Clark
Mrs. Jennie J. Clark, nee DaCosse, passed away at her
home in Clifton
last Thursday morning after an extended illness of several months
duration. The last
few weeks of her illness were most severe but despite all this she
went through it
all with grit and determination to get well again but it was not to
be.
Mrs.
Clark was born near Clifton on August 16, 1858, and at the time of
her death was
two months and nineteen days past seventy-four years of age.
At the age of 19
years she was united in marriage to Mr. John Hamende, and to this
union were born
to children, both of whom preceded her in death.
A few years
after her husband's
death she was united in marriage to Mr. Henry Krumwiede and to this
union was born
six children, all of whom survive. Following this marriage they
started a hotel known
as the Clifton House and one which became know to long distances as
one of the best
hotels in this section.
Mr. and Mrs. Krumwiede became
separated and a few years
later she was married to Mr. Philip Clark. Together these two
continued to operate
the Clifton House until the work became too hard for her and they
retired from active
life.
About three years ago Mr. Clark passed away and since
that time she gradually
failed in health.
Mrs. Clark, through her business life became
known far and
wide for her kindness and the courtesies extended to all and it was
with sadness
that the news of her passing was received.
Mrs. Clark leaves
to mourn her departure
the following children: Theodore Krumwiede of LaGrange; Lena, Mrs.
Lawrence Baron,
of Kankakee; Lillie, Mrs. Charles Johnson of Clifton; Lenore, Mrs.
Oval Flott of
(unreadable); Walter Krumwiede, of LaGrange; Dewey Krumwiede and
Lydia, Mrs. Will
Bodeman of Lakefiled, Minnesota. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs.
Della Mathy and
Mrs. Elizabeth Hamende of Clifton, and Three brothers, Eugene
DaCoss (sic) of Chicago
and Arthur and Gaston DaCosse. She also leaves nine grandchildren,
who with the family
will miss the kindly administrations of a mother, sister and
grandmother whose every
thought was for the welfare of her loved oned.
The funeral
services were (unreadable)
from St. Peter's Catholic Church, of which she had long been a
member at 9:30 o'clock
Saturday morning with the Rev. Fr. E. A. Sweeney officiating at the
solemn mass.
During the service, Mrs. Arthur Hamende of Chebanse, singing with
the choir, sang
(unreadalbe) a most beautiful and fitting (unreadble).
Interment was made in
the Clifton Catholic Cemetery. Six nephews were the pall beareres,
namely Arthur
and Edmond Hamende, Fred, Ed, Emile (?) and Herman Mathy. The
flower managers were
members of (appears to be Ever*** Camp R.N.A.) and these offerings
were of magnitude
and beauty.
We extend to the members of this family our
sincere sympathy in
your bereavement.
