FIRST GENERATION

FIRST GENERATION

1. Henry Konrad KRUMWIEDE (photo) was born on 27 Jul 1830 in Woelpke, Hanover, Germany. (1) He immigrated on 23 Oct 1854 to New York, New York. (2) He died on 17 Oct 1918 in Buckley, Iroquois County, Illinois. He was buried about 20 Oct 1918 in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Buckley, Illinois. (3) Section B, Row 27, Plot 15

He was married to Sophia Dorothea STERNBERG (daughter of Juergen Heinrich STERNBERG and Louise SCHNEWEISS) on 4 Aug 1854 in Lutheran Church, Hagen, Hanover, Germany. Dorothea STERNBERG emigrated as an unmarried female. Due to the closeness of the reported marriage date to the date of arrival in New York (see immigration page), it is likely that this couple had only a religious ceremony and were never LEGALLY married. This was not uncommon in Germany, marriages often being recorded some time after the religious "betrothal" ceremony. As far as the government was concerned, they weren't married until they shared a household, at which time they were to record the marriage officially. The Lutheran Church recognized this couple as a married couple. It is, indeed, possible that they never got "legally" married at any time.
Sophia Dorothea STERNBERG (4) was born on 30 Apr 1834 in Borstel, Hanover, Germany. (1) Her point of departure on immigration records is shown as Borstel - her parents' place of residence. She immigrated on 23 Oct 1854 to New York, New York. (5) Transcription of these hand-written passenger lists often contains errors. Because of the placement of this name on the list, the given name Dorothea, the village of origin, the age, it is reasonable to believe this is Dorothea STERNBERG even though the transcription reads STERNBACH. She died on 2 Oct 1914. She was buried about 5 Oct 1914 in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Buckley, Illinois.(3) Section B, Row 27, Plot 15 Tombstone says "Dorothea." Immigration record also gives name as Dorothea. It seems to have been common for women to be know only by their "middle" name. Henry Konrad KRUMWIEDE and Sophia Dorothea STERNBERG had the following children:

child+2 i. Mary KRUMWIEDE.
child+3 ii. Henry William KRUMWIEDE.
child+4 iii. August H KRUMWIEDE.
child+5 iv. Fredrick H KRUMWIEDE.
child+6 v. Louis KRUMWIEDE.
child+7 vi. Emma L KRUMWIEDE.
child+8 vii. William KRUMWIEDE.
child+9 viii. George August KRUMWIEDE.
child+10 ix. Bertha KRUMWIEDE.
child11 x. Wilhelmine Alwine S L E KRUMWIEDE was born on 9 Jul 1877. She died on 6 Apr 1881.(1) She was buried about 9 Apr 1881 in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Buckley, Illinois. (3) Section B, Row 27, Plot 15 Her full name is Wilhelmine Alwine Sophia Louise Emma. Because of this child's burial location and date of birth, I have placed her into this family. If anyone has other information regarding her identity, please, share it with me.

Loretta,
Getting your mail the other day prompted me to check your site which I haven't visited in a while. Under the decendents of Heinrich K KRUMWIEDE you have Wilhemina Alwine SLE KRUMWIEDE and asked for additional information. What I have isn't much but here you go. In the 1880 Census, Heinrich is listed as having a daughter Minnie age 3. This must be the same person you have. I was going to ask you about her a while ago, but you listed her within a week of me finding her on the Census.
