3. Henry Charles KRUMWIEDE (9) was born on 5 Nov 1862 in Henry, McHenry County, Illinois. He died on 21 Feb 1929 in Buckley, Iroquois County, Illinois. He was buried about 24 Feb 1929 in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Buckley, Illinois.⁽²⁾ Section A, Row 13A, Plot 57 (There was some disagreement when I asked in the past about the middle initial "C" in Henry's name. Some told me it stood for Charles, but others said it stood for Conrad. With the purchase of a transcription of birth records from Iroquois County, the mystery was solved. When Henry registered the births of his children, he used his own full name in the registry, and gave his name as Henry Charles.)

He was married to Anna Elizabeth "Karoline" SCHOH (daughter of SCHOH) on 24 Feb 1884 in Iroquois County, Illinois. ^{(5)(7) (10)} Witnesses to the ceremony were: August Krumwiede, Louis Krumwiede, Emma Krumwiede, Lina Giertz. County Record # 135 Anna Elizabeth "Karoline" SCHOH was born on 11 May 1860 in Settrup Anet Fuerstenau Hanover Germany. ⁽⁵⁾ She died on 20 Mar 1899 in Buckley, Iroquois County, Illinois. ⁽¹¹⁾

Departed

Another highly respected and esteemed lady has been called to the home above. Mrs. H.C. Krumwiede departed from this life last Monday morning at 6 o'clock. Her sudden, unexpected death was a painful surprise to everyone. The deceased attended the funeral of the late Mrs. Scherkenbach last Thursday, and appeared to be in her usual health. During the evening of that day she complained of not feeling well and retired early, hoping to feel better on the morrow. But her hopes were not fulfilled. When it was noticed that the disease would not give way to the treatment, a physician was called. He pronounced a case of la-grippe. The patient grew rapidly worse and on Sunday (unreadable) to be sinking. Yet, hopes for her ultimate recovery were entertained. She was conscious up to about six hours before her death. At the break of day, her heart failed and the soul took its flight to the realms beyond. Only a few of the nearest relatives knew that she was sick. The community was so shocked by the announcement of her sudden taking off that it seemed incredible to believe. She was another of those meek, modest, unassuming natures, an exceptionally industrious woman. She was of retiring habit, and not much seen in society. She was a kind and dutiful wife and mother, sacrificing all for the health and comfort of her loved ones. 'Tis sad, extremely so, that she had to leave her family so soon.
Mrs. Carolina (sic) Krumwiede, nee Schoh, was born May 11, 1860, at Settrup, Anet Fuerstenau, Hanover. At the age of seventeen she, in company with her sister, Mrs. Sprehe and her husband, emigrated to this country. After a brief stay in New York they came west and located here. In the winter of 1884 the deceased was united in marriage to Mr. H. C. Krumwiede. The union was blessed with eight children, the oldest child being about 14 years old, the youngest 3 years.
The funeral took place last Thursday afternoon from the Lutheran church. Though the highways were in so bad a condition that it was a difficult task to travel over them, a very large congregation of sorrowful, sympathizing friends were present. Messrs. Knueppel, Luhrsen, Sachtjehn, Kottke, Jaster and Ahlfeld carried the remains to her last resting place. May she rest in peace till the day of resurrection. The husband and children are assured of the deep sympathy of the entire community.

She was buried about 24 Mar 1899 in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Buckley, Illinois.⁽²⁾ Section A, Row 13A, Plot 57, to the right of her niece and Henry C. Krumwiede's second wife, Minna Sprehe Krumwiede. The stone is an old, white obelisk that is now almost unreadable. "Karoline E, wife of Heinrich C Krumwiede, May 11 1860 - Mar 20 1899." She immigrated age 17. ⁽⁵⁾ Her full name is Anna Elizabeth Karoline. ⁽¹²⁾(7) Karoline's granddaughter, Verna Krumwiede Heimlich, told me on Sept. 3, 1995, that the correct spelling of this surname is SCHO or SHO. Other spellings discovered during research are SCHOCH and SCHOUGH.

He was married to Frederika Karolina "Minna" SPREHE (daughter of Friederich SPREHE and Anna Marie "Elizabeth" SCHOH [sister to Karoline SCHOH]) on 13 Jun 1902 in Buckley, Iroquois County, Illinois.⁽⁶⁾ Frederika Karolina "Minna" SPREHE ⁽¹³⁾ was born on 10 Jun 1883 in Buckley, Iroquois County, Illinois.⁽⁶⁾ There is a listing in Iroquois County Birth Records to 1916, Q-S, which reads: SPREHE, Minnie | 06/14/1884 | Buckley | John F. | SCHOP, Lizzie S. Elizabeth Schoh is referred to in this manner in several places, and Frederick John Sprehe is often referred to as John Frederick. Similarity of names in the family caused this use of middle names as first names in several instances.
However, there is no similarity between the transcription and the date of birth as recorded for this person in family records except that both dates are in June. She died on 2 Aug 1926 in Buckley, Iroquois County, Illinois. ⁽¹⁴⁾

Death of Mrs. H.C. Krumwiede

Death again entered our midst and bereaved a happy family of its needed mother. He[r] death, due to heart disease, occurred last Monday afternoon. The Sunday before she had attended divine service. Before her relatives and neighbors could be notified of her sudden illness, she had passed away. Thereby we are reminded of that which our church confesses:
"Who knows how near my end may be?
Time speeds away, and death comes on.
How swiftly, ah, how suddenly,
May death be here, and life be gone.
My God for Jesus' sake I pray,
Thy peace may bless my dying day."
The deceased, Mrs. Minna Krumwiede, was born June 10, 1883, at Buckley. Here she was baptized, attended school and was confirmed in the Lutheran church. In the year of 1902 she was married to Henry Krumwiede. This union the Lord blessed with ten children.
By her marriage she also became mother to the eight children of Mr. Krumwiede's first marriage. These she cared for and treated like her own children and was loved and respected by them as though she were their true mother.
She was in poor health for the last few years. Patiently, without complaining, she bore whatever burden the Lord laid upon her. She was a faithful Christian, faithful in the use of God's word and sacrament, and we are confident that the Lord received her soul to enjoy in His glorious presence an everlasting life.
The days of her earthly life number 43 years, 1 month and 22 days. Her unexpected departure is mourned by her sorrowing husband, ten children, eight step children, eighteen grandchildren, her aged parents, five brothers, two sisters, and many other relatives and friends. May she rest in peace.

[The obituary for Minna Sprehe Krumwiede sounds as if it were written by J.M. Gross, just as does the obituary for her aunt, the first wife of Henry C. Krumwiede. Herr Gross' great-granddaughter tells me that he did work for one of the newspapers, though she is not sure which one.]

Henry Krumwiede

BUCKLEY -- Henry Krumwiede, 82, Buckley, died at 6:20 p.m. Monday, July 25, 1988, at Clifton Community Hospital.
He was born January 7, 1906, in Buckley, the son of Henry C. and Minnie Sprehe Krumwiede.
He is survived by one nephew, Lorenz Krumwiede of Buckley, who he lived with for 35 years (there were many many more nephews and nieces surviving, but special mention needed to be made of Lorenz, with whom his relationship was more that of a brother); three sisters, Laura Walwer of Peoria, Rosie Weber of Onarga and Hilda Ekhoff of Woodworth; and four brothers, Herman Krumwiede of Cissna Park, George Krumwiede of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Fred Krumwiede of Delrey and Carl Krumwiede of Onarga.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and four sisters.
Mr. Krumwiede spent his childhood in the Buckley area and attended St. John's Lutheran School in Buckley. He was a retired farmer and a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Buckley.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buckley, with the Rev. Hugh McGhghy officiating. Burial will be in the St. John's Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion Post No. 432 of Buckley.
Visitation will be 5 - 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Ford-Baier Funeral Home in Buckley.
