Mr. William Hartke called
That Mr. William Hartke, strong, healthy, jovial William Hartke is no more in the land of the living, this is indeed, difficult to believe. Last Thursday he was on the streets, in the store, happy and joking as ever. He complained of nothing. That was foreign to his nature. Toward supper time he walked homeward. At Mr. Geo. Weisenbarn's house he broke down. The attack came without warning. Resting a little while he recovered and with difficulty he reached his home. Mrs. Hartke got busy at once, gave him a foot bath, put a hot water bag on his chest, but hourly he grew worse. A doctor was called. Acute indigestion seemed to cause his trouble. After a hypodermic injection was given he felt slightly easier. Later a severe chill attacked him. To do all in their power for the sick man, two Paxton physicians were called, and another local physician. Pneumonia, it was pronounced, had not set in. Though all present knew that he was a very sick man, yet no one realized that the end was so near. Quite suddenly he breathed his last. That was midnight on Saturday.
People certainly were shocked on Sunday morning to learn of the sad tidings. Everybody was friend of the deceased.
Mr. William Hartke was born at Downer's Grove in 1852, on May 18. When about sixteen years old, he removed to this community with his parents. Here he has lived the greater part of his life. in the year 1901 the departed and his family removed to Sherburn, Minn., and after a sojourn of thirteen years the family returned to this place, five years ago. Four children, three boys and one daughter preceded their father to the life beyond. Last October his oldest daughter died, and two days later his father-in-law Grandpa Krumwiede. Besides the grief-stricken widow, three sons, George and Theodore of Del Rey, and Henry of Sherburn, Minn., and Mrs. Chas. Wilkens of Missouri survive.
This is an extremely hard blow for the widow who went through so much trouble last winter, and who has not been in good health for some time. Only a few weeks ago, Mr. Hartke settled up some business affairs. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. A very large congregation of sorrowing friends attended. Mr. Hartke is no more, but his memory will long be held sacred by Buckley people.
