Buckley Couple Adopt Fatherless Baby Girl.
The finger of scorn will never be pointed at the child of Mathielda Ahlefeld
because her mother confessed that the father of her child was unknown. The little
one which came into the world last March has been adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Edward
Steinman of Buckley and will be reared by these respectable people as their very
own.
Mathielda Ahlefeld is a poor, unfortunate servant girl, only 20 years old, who
finds it difficult enough to get along in the world without being burdened with
a child, so she stilled the cries that arose from her heart and did that which
seemed best for her and the baby, relinquishing all claims to the little one.
(Edward Steinmann is Edna's great-uncle.)
She was in the news in 1922.
10 Nov 1922-Miss Edna Steinmann, who had been working in Champaign, was obliged
to give up her position and return home. Miss Edna hurt her knee and had to give
the injured member a rest.
She died on 7 Oct 1999 in South Bend, Indiana.382

Edna's mother's name is known, and she is a member of the Steinmann family
through the Ahlefeld family. Her relationship to Edward Steinmann is not quite
clear as yet, but I have begun to suspect he is her uncle. According to sources,
Edna was raised by the Bartell family at their home for unwed mothers, where
she was born. Obviously, she joined the household of Ed Steinmann and Emma Hilgendforf
as a "daughter" or "granddaughter" at some point, proably
as a small child since she was viewed as a daughter of the house. Edna L AHLEFELD
STEINMANN and Barney BARTELL were married on 21 Nov 1923 in St. John's Lutheran
Church (LCMS), Buckley, Illinois.81,383 The church record reads: "21
Nov: Bartel Bartell to Edna Steinmann." Barney BARTELL
