William's line at this writing goes back to James Cock b. abt 1625 married Sarah
Clarke daughter of Samuel Clarke. They lived in Matincock, Killingsworth, Long
Island New York. (Jordan,Joseph, Samuel, Henry, James)
William at the tender age of 17 served in the War of 1812 . He enlisted 29 August
1814 in Capt. Levi Lacy's Company of New York Volunteer Militia, Co. C. Crosby's
Regiment. He participated in the successful defense of Fort Erie on 23
September 1814, but was taken prisoner by the Indians and was held by them
near the head of Lake Ontario until he escaped in May 1815. He landed at
Lewiston on May 26, 1815. He was in the army for 9 months and 1 day and paid at
the rate of $8.00 per month. He was given a land bounty of 160 acres in Iowa,
which he did not take until around 1846. He signed his name William Cocke, but
after the war, he and his father both began using Cox.
After the war William stayed in Upper Canada and on 9 October, 1821, he
married Elizabeth Teeple, daughter of Phillip and Catherine Teeple (although
Elizabeth had been born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.) Prior to that he
had applied for a land grant in Upper Canada in Trafalgar Twp, very near
Hamilton and he said he would take any vacant crown lands available. In his
application, it was stated that he was the "son of Jordan Cox of Norwich" . His
age at that time was 21 years old, he had been in the province for 3 years.
