Arne Henriksen Goplen was born 23 April 1818 in Goplen, Nord-Torpa, Norway. He was a farmer, married to Ingeborg Marie Haug. She was born 26 August 1821 in Øverbygda, Nord-Torpa, and was a daughter of Jacob Nordhaug and Dorthe Andersdtr. Lille Goplen. Ingeborg's family name is also written Sveen and Haug.
They emigrated to America in 1869 with their 7 youngest children; Inga b.1849, Henrik b. 1852, Marthea b. 1855, Andreas b. 1857, Dina b. 1861, Maria b. 1865 and Anne b.1868. Their oldest daughter, Helene b. 1847, was married to Christian Ulsaker. Christian and Helene remained in Nord-Torpa and purchased the Goplen farm from Arne when he emigrated to the U.S.
According to the emigration protocol, Arne brought with him the considerable sum of 1,900 spesiedaler (Norwegian currency at the time), he paid 105 spesiedaler for the voyage to Quebec, Canada.
Further information shows that they left Cristiana (Oslo), aboard the sailing ship Septentrio, on June 28 and arrived in Quebec on August 27.
The family settled on an 80 acre farm in the south half of the NE quarter of Section 4 of Roscoe Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota. Many of their descendants live in the Zumbrota, Minnesota area as well as in Griggs and Hettinger Counties in North Dakota.
Arne died 24 August 1888 and Ingeborg 10 February 1877, both in the U.S. They are buried at Lands Norwegian Lutheran Church Cemetery outside of Zumbrota in Minneola Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota.
