ENGSNEED OBSERVATIONS on the SNEED ENGLISH CONNECTION by Richard "Dick" Baldauf typed by Linda Starr JAN 1997 [I apologize to the group, and especially to Dick, for the delay in getting this out to you. As in other things, ideas and com ments are Dick's; I get credit only for typos. LSS] In looking through the SNEED ancestral chart received from B. W. Sneed, we find a note to the right of the name Samuel SNEAD which reads: "Descended from William SNEYD of Keel who died in 1694, through his second son. Ref. Burk's." And on page 4 of the SNEYD pedigree chart we are given this descent: Nathaniel SNEAD of Keele 1612 William SNEYD of Keele through his second son, grandfather of: Samuel SNEAD with wife Alice and son William born about 1626. Grammatically speaking, we are being told that William, grandfather of Samuel, died in 1694. A similar chart provided by cousin Frances Trader contains a similar statement. There is no way that Samuel's grandfather could have died as late as 1694. Cousin Frances Trader also provides (1981) a SNEED worksheet, providing these items: "Descended from William SNEYD of Keel through his second son Richard SNEYD, Sheriff of Derbyshire, England who died in 1694 - Burke's Peerage, page ? " Cousin Frances continues: "Samuel SNEAD d. - 1643. B - ? " " and wf. Alice & son William (b. about 1630) came to 200 acres (land grant) at head of Keath's Creek, James River Co. VA in 1634 (35). Son William returned to England to be educated - married & died there. His 2 younger sons returned to the Virginia Plantation of their grandmother (Alice SNEED). Ref: St. Peter's & St. Paul's Parish Records in New Kent Co. VA." Above information sent to F. M. Sneed of Chicago in 1929 by Mrs. Jennie T. Grayson, Genealogist of Richmond, VA -- Where are her records? "A William SNEAD came to America in 1664 A William SNEAD came to America in 1666 A William SNEAD married Mary THOMAS in 1688 in Philadelphia. Get Quaker records by Wm Hinshaw. Where? royal line in England." Is this our William? Our William was living in Hanover Co. VA in 1740 (large landowner). Did he marry Eliz Harris? Is his will in North ampton Co. VA in 1798 or Henrico Co. in 1783? Ref. Grayson [for following sons LSS] William SNEED had son (sic) Grayson: Benjamin (1730-1819) Alexander (1736) Zacharia (1737) Charles (1738) William (1734) Robert (1740) Benjamin of Fancy Hill, Ref. _Virkus Compendium_ 1925, p. 834; 1937, pp. 461, 486 In a letter dated 7 September 1951, cousin Frances says this: "For the SNEED line I have no proof of any kind past Isabella Hope Batterton (Baldauf line), to _Burke's Landed Gentry of Great Britain_, Part 2, pp. 1742-43 - SNEYD of Keele Hall. Burke drops us off at William SNEYDE, ancestor of the SNEYDS of Bishton, Bel mont, Ashcome, and Basford, Co. Stafford." Cousin Frances, it seems, has somehow learned that the name of the second son of William SNEYD was Richard. Does this help in our age discrepancy? Not really. If William, son of Samuel, was born about 1630 and Sameul born, say in 1605, Richard would have to have been born about 1580, making him over a hundred years old in 1690. If the death of Richard is pushed back to 1594, is the date realistic? Possibly. But Samuel would have to have had his first won William at about 36 years of age. Is the date wrong or is there something wrong with the line of descent? There are lots of editions of _Burke's Peerage_, and most of them stay with the titled branches only. In an older edition however, one might be able to discover the names of the siblings. 2
