BLDFNTES Dick Baldauf's OBSERVATIONS edited by Linda Sparks Starr MAY 1996 [Richard "Dick" Baldauf is a JOHNSON/MIMS/SNEAD/MARTIN researcher who is trying to tie his JOHNSON line to the Michael Johnson who lived "where we would expect Edward Johnson to be" in the 1698 road clearance order. We've corresponded since January, but most has not been of general interest to the entire group. However, we're now getting into some allied lines which others may find interesting. I plan to extract only those comments which are per tinent to the group as a whole. Until connecting with me, Dick and his fellow researcher Susan Stewart, had entirely ignored our various surnames, thus making their conclusions all the more in teresting. They had, however, seen Dr. Lorand Johnson's work in a JOHNSON genealogy by David Graham. Full credit goes to Dick and Susan for content; typos are my own doing. LSS] I want to start with Dick's comments on my Capt. Christopher Clark group sheet: "...it was interesting that Christopher Clark owned land as far afield as Albemarle Co. He even had con tacts with members of the SNEAD family...the Alexander Snead of Little River in Hanover Co...was brother of my ancestor, _Benjamin Snead_ of Fancy Hill, whose property originally belonged to Thomas Jefferson's family. Benjamin was tutor to the Randolph children. The Sneads were early in New Kent Co., and they seem to have moved to Albemarle Co. just as Christopher did." As it turns out, Dick's SNEAD/SNEED line _may have_ great sig nificance in our MOORMAN research. Susan prepared a "working" chart which I'll try to "walk" you through. A word of warning: THIS IS A WORKING CHART ONLY -- nothing is engraved in stone. [If this doesn't work for you, send Jeffrey a request and he'll show off his "new" scanner; he'll need to know how you can receive the chart. gastarr@ionet.net] First generation is Samuel SNEAD and Alice; they had three children (second generation) -- (1) Samuel who appears on the Pamunkey River 1664 as a neighbor of Wm. BASSETT; (2) William b. 1630; and (3) Susan who married by 1652 Thomas REYNOLDS. Susan proposes that this Thomas and Susan (Snead) REYNOLDS had a son Thomas who was father of Elizabeth Reynolds who married Charles "M" MOORMAN (himself father of Thomas MOORMAN who married Rachel CLARK.) [Dick apparently found the Susan Snead marriage to Thomas Renalls by 1652 in _The Sneads in Fluvanna County_. I've asked for specifics Thus, without reading my REYNOLDS update, Susan came up with the same _probable_ father of Elizabeth that I did AND added yet another generation! Needless to say, this differs from Tillman's REYNOLDS genealogy and the general MOORMAN legend. LSS] Back to second generation (2) William SNEAD b. 1630 and Susan's chart: He had at least two sons -- John (Dick's line) and Thomas. This Thomas SNEAD appears as a neighbor in NKC of Thomas MOORMAN and Thomas REYNOLDS Sr. [Here they've added a line and the name "Rebecca" under Thomas' name. I'm not sure if it's wife or daughter. They will clarify I'm sure. LSS] William's (b. 1630) son John SNEAD (third generation) had four sons -- Henry, William b. 1690, John and Samuel. This William SNEAD b. 1690 (fourth generation) had six sons -- (1) Benjamin b. c1721 married Polly Perry in Albemarle Co.; (2) Alexander; (3) ZACHARIAH; (4) Charles; (5) William; and (6) Robert. Benjamin SNEAD (b. 1721 #1 above and fifth generation) had four children: (1) John SNEAD b. 1755 who married Sarah JOHNSON; (2) Susannah m. George Faris/Phares; (3) Peggy m. Richard JOHNSON; and (4) Frances m. David Garth. Susan's note at the bottom of the chart reads: "Under this theory John Snead would be related to the children of Thomas Moor- man and Rachael Clark. Also, an early Arthur Johnson married a Phares." [This Arthur is the one "throught to be" brother of Penelope/son of Edward Johnson by some earlier researchers; however, I've seen nothing to support this. Also, note the given name "Zachariah" in the SNEAD line. LSS] Susan, writing about earlier family connections with "our" bunch: "Susan Sneed who wed Thomas Renalls also becomes an integral figure. Note that the daughter of Capt. Christopher Clark and Penelope Johnson -- Rachel "M" born in 1714 married as her first husband Thomas Moorman in 1729/30. Thomas Moorman was the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Reynolds) Moorman. Bet this Elizabeth Reynolds is a descendant of Susan (Sneed) Renalls and her son is named after Susan's husband, Thomas Renalls... Next consider that in 1664 Samuel Sneed Jr. is a neighbor of Capt. William Bassett. Is this the same Capt. William Bassett or is it his son, also named William, who is seen as a neighbor of Edward Johnson and Thomas Mims in 1690? It would appear to be the son but note that in this next generation these families have moved further west from the Pamunkey River along the Powhite Swamp and Beaverdam Branch of the Chickahominy River. Note that in 1690 Edward Johnson is shown in the proces sioners' list along with these significant names: Mr. William Bassett, Thomas Moorman, Thomas Snead and Tho. Renalls. I am un sure of some of the generations of these men with the exception of Thomas Snead who is the brother to your John Snead, both sons of William Snead and nephews of Samuel Sneed and Susan (Sneed) Renalls. Also on this list are Henry, Thomas, Martin and William Mar tin, along with John Snead. So here is another link between the Sneads and the Johnsons, predating the marriage of Edward's daughter Penelope to Capt. Christopher Clark. It also predates the marriage of Penelope's daughter Rachel to Thomas Moorman, son of Charles and Elizabeth (Reynolds) Moorman. By 1695 Edward Johnson is joined by a new neighbor Thomas Mims. This Thomas Mims must be the father of Thomas Mims Jr. who wed Mollyane Martin. All this inter-related activity is quite astonishing." Back to my group sheet for Capt. Xpher Clark: Dick corrected my statement that dau Agnes CLARK m. Benjamin JOHNSTON, "_son of Sir Wm Johnston_ of Scotland: "From the chart of the Family of Johnston of that Ilk and of Caskieben by Alexander Johnstone Jr., there is no way that "Sir Wm." could be a knight. This William was the son of James Johnston, who was 'provydit to nothing'. There is a fine descent, probably back to royalty, but it is through allied families several generations back. See Johnston Chart." [I then tried to locate the source for "Sir William Johnston" as Benjamin's father. I found it in several places, but the closest "reliable" (e.g. documented) source was given by James McConnell in 1984: _Americans of Gentle Birth_, vol. I, page 354 (no author or editor given). Recently a message to WOODSON researchers warned about errors in early 20th century "brag books" -- _Amer of G. Birth_ was the example given! LSS] Now to Dick's specific JOHNSON line: "My line goes back to _James Johnson/Johnston of Goochland_, who married _Mildred Mims_, dau of John. The MIMS line goes back through John's wife, perhaps Sarah, to Thomas Mims Jr. & Mollyane Martin to Thomas Mims." The person he's trying to connect to is Michael Johnson whose children -- Daniel b. 1699, Anne b. 1705, Sarah b. 1707 and Agnes b.1708 -- appear in the St. Peter's Parish Register. In fact, Michael is living where Penelope's father _should have been living_ in 1698. Later deeds and Michael's probate records show Michael had sons John, James, Daniel, Isaac and possibly Ben jamin. We agree records indicate a relationship between this Michael and Edward Johnson (Penelope's father); we just haven't figured out "what" it is. To further complicate things, Dick says: "... it seems likely that my James Johnson is connected to the Michael Johnson branch. But oddly John Snead's two children apparently married Johnsons of different families. Richard is not a name used by my Johnson family ... There is no apparent relationship between _Sarah Johnson_ (dau of James Johnson of Goochland & Mildred Mims) and _Richard Johnson_ who m. Peggy Snead. No Richard Johnsons among the Caskiebien clan (Alexander, William & John) or the Michael Johnson et al group." Prior to their move to the Tuckahoe Creek area of Henrico (later Goochland Co.), Michael and Sarah Johnson witnessed the Quaker wedding of Thomas LANKFORD held in New Kent Meeting House, Black Creek 1700, 2 28. This could well be significant for Fran cis Clark -- brother/cousin of Capt. Christopher -- married Cor delia LANKFORD in this same timeframe and place. Also, this is the same Meeting that Alexander MacKeney attended and from which _an_ Alexander MacKeney was disowned. [This may not be the place to raise this question, but "Where is Christopher and Penelope Clark, Edward and Elizabeth Johnson and Thomas Moorman in these Quaker records?" There's no doubt -- THIS is the Meeting they would have attended IF they were practicing Quakers in 1700. LSS] Susan continuing: "All these little pieces add up to the pile of evidence linking Michael to Penelope Clark. But I still don't see how they can be brother and sister unless Edward was married much earlier than circa 1677 and is considerably older than we realize. I also am still deeply troubled that Michael did not use any of the Christian names that we see in Penelope's children and they don't appear in subsequent generations either." [Lorand Johnson says Edward was born c1638; NKC records SUGGEST he was born before 1656. LSS] [Susan thinks the answer lies in tracing the parentage of Ben jamin, Charles and George Johnson. I admit to completely ignor ing JOHNSONs until Edward. Therefore, I haven't pursued Benjamin b. 1701 son of Edward, or the Benjamin Johnson, son-in-law of Christopher and Penelope. Susan has also positioned another Ben jamin b. c1704 who died in Goochland Co. 1744 as son of Michael in NKC 1698 -- making three Benjamins. Has anyone else traced and separated the various Benjamins in subsequent records? Luck- ily, Thomas Jones joined our group after I typed that question; he descends from s-in-l Benjamin. LSS] Susan and Dick had trouble following my land descriptions in my update on Edward Johnson. She wondered why I was so concerned about Edward being a neighbor of Wm Atkinson (who ran a ferry) on the Pamunkey River when Edward's land was on Powhite Swamp: "The distance is not great between Powhite Swamp and the Pamunkey River and there is no way of knowing at this time exactly how the land of William Atkinson was positioned as a neighbor of Edward's. Atkinson could have been located easterly toward the Pamunkey River from Edward's property. We also could be talking about the ownership of significant acreage which would make it possible for Atkinson to have land up to the Pamunkey River bound- aries but not Edward. The really interesting thing about this is _Col. Richard Johnson_ who owned property at Pamunkey [Neck] River. Col. Richard in King and Queen County was a neighbor of James MINGE and it was this James Minge who transported in 1695 Thomas MIMS and who also was a neighbor of Edward Johnson. [Dick then adds a note] This sounds as if Minge lived in the middle with Richard on one side and Edward on the other side." [We can only speculate at this point whether Edward and Col. Richard are related; Col. Richard's daughter married a James Johnson (lineage untraced) which only complicates things more! LSS] Susan also mentions a land patent dated 8 APR 1668 to James JOHNSON and Domingo Mederis for 1000 acres in New Kent Co. be tween Dragon's Swamp and Axell's Brook; 500 acres of which was granted to Thomas Clayborne in 1662 and assigned to them. This patent becomes significant when one learns that "Clayborne" is later found as a given name in Dick's line -- Clayborn Johnson, son of Drury and Hannah (Clark) Johnson. Dick THINKS this Drury Johnson is a brother of his James Johnson of Goochland who married Mildred MIMS c1751. Which of two brothers is their father is his question. At least two, and possibly three, children of Michael Johnson who was in New Kent Co. late 1600s named sons "James". So, was the James Johnson of the 1668 patent related to Edward Johnson? Dick raised the following questions after receipt of my Alexander MacKENNEY file: "Were you aware that there was an earlier Daniel Johnson who was a neighbor of Alexander MacKenney? Susan wonders if Edward and Daniel are not brothers, and thus Edward perhaps an uncle of Michaels ... Since Alexander and the early Daniel were neighbors, could it be possible that Daniel is father of Michael? Your records on Alexander MacKenney show that he lived next to John WATSON, suggesting that Michael was in the right proximity to marry John's dau, Sarah Watson..." It took Susan a bit longer to receive and comment on my MacKENEY file: "Alexander moved to New Kent in 1694. You wonder if this may have been the impetus for Michael's [Johnson] move. In other words, could Alexander and Michael have been related through Michael's side? However, Linda's land records show nothing to suggest this... Alexander is an older man with an adult son who was at least 21 in 1694, giving Thomas a birth year no later than ca.1673. This makes Thomas a contemporary of Michael... Query? Why is Alexander _giving_, not selling, land to the Tandy sisters Agnes and Anne? We not only have two separate gifts, but an arrangement that insures the land remaining in the hands of one family. Susan's theory is that Agnes and Anne are nieces or granddaus. of Alexander. The father John Tandy is dead; we don't know about the mother. These lands look like a dowry. Her opinion is that the mother of Agnes and Anne is Alexander's sister, who was the wife of John Tandy -- or the mother is Alexander's daughter... Her partial family line-up: Alexander had a sister who married John Tandy Alexander may have had a sister who married Roger Comeings Alexander had a wife Mary (---) who may have been a Comeings Alexander had a son named Thomas of Henrico Co. Alexander may have had an Alexander Jr. who is the right man for the one mentioned as being disowned at the Black Creek Mtg Alexander was a neighbor of Daniel Johnson and John Watson when he lived in Henrico Co. Alexander was a neighbor of Michael Johnson when living in New Kent Co. Alexander is not the same generation as Michael [Johnson]. He is of the same generation as Michael's unknown father. Alexander was a Scotsman, as were the Johnsons." One final question: Neither Alexander McKeney nor Daniel Johnson appear on the 1678 tithing list in Henrico Co. But, both appear in Henrico Co. in 1684 -- did they arrive together?
