Wit: Isham HALEY, John Flowers, John Thomas, Zachariah MOORMAN. Land Grants in Georgia: The following GA land grant petition appears to have been based on headrights, 100 acres for petitioner Andrew MOORMAN and 50 acres for wife and five children brought into the colony. The fact that Andrew asked for 400 acres but was granted only 250 acres suggests that Andrew could prove only four headrights (himself, wife, two children) as of the date he settled in GA. SEP 1760 Petition of Andrew MOORMAN setting forth that he was lately come into the Province from NC in order to settle and improve land and was set down on a vacant piece about two miles above Poor Robin's Bluff on the Savannah River and was desirous to obtain a grant of land there having a wife and five children. Therefore praying for four hundred acres at the aforesaid place between the lands of James Thomas and Joseph Burton on which he had already begun settlement. ORDERED: That the further consideration of said petition be postponed ... [Note: Petition was finally grnated in DEC 1760 but only for 250 acres. Don't know why there was a disparity between petition and grant.] DEC 1763 Petition of Catherine MOORMAN, widow of Andrew MOORMAN with three children, for an additional 150 acres in St. Mathew's Parish, to be added to 250 acres already granted in DEC 1760. JAN 1767 Petition of Catherine MOORMAN for an additional 100 acres of land in St. Mathew's Parish. 1 MAY 1770 Land Petition of Thomas MOORMAN setting forth that Andrew MOORMAN, late of St. Mathew's Parish in the Province had in the year 1761, (possessed) 250 acres of land ordered him whereon he lived and cultivated and improved the same to the time of his death. That the said Andrew departed this life intestate leaving a wife and children who are also dead (the children in their infancy) whereby the Premesses des- cended and came to the Petitioner, his eldest brother and heir at law. That the Petitioner being settled with him fam- ily in NC was induced to dispose of said land to a purchaser who had taken possession of said land and lived thereon and the Petitioner gave his bond for making good title thereto not doubting but that his brother's title thereto was com- pleat but on the offices being searched he found to his very great surprise that no grant had been taken out for the said land and only a survey thereof returned to the Office. Therefore praying that the truth of the Premesses appearing and his particular situation considered his Majesty's grant for the said land might be ordered to pass in his name as the eldest brother and heir of the deceased to enable him to discharge his obligation. GRANTED: (Colonial Records of Georgia, vols. VIII-XI, 1759- 1767, Candler) (DCT note: As we now know, Andrew MOORMAN did not die intestate but had a will drawn up in 1761. Apparently Thomas could not locate the will after the death of Catherine and her children. I suspect that the search for a grant document was less than thorough for I can- not conceive of Catherine asking for more land if the original grant had not been completed.)
