ACHLSPII This continuation of "Achilles MOORMAN and Elizabeth ADAMS" (ACHILLES.txt) begins with their move from Albemarle Co. to the area of Bedford Co. which fell into Campbell Co. when it was created in 1781. A discussion of their "proven" and "purported" children follows. Corrections and additional proof of children are always welcome. Linda Sparks Starr, AUG 1997. ---------------------- That the Albemarle County Achilles MOORMAN, last seen in court records as witness to a 1765 deed, is the same person later found in Bedford County is proven by Achilles Mooreman "of the County of Bedford" to George Gilmer 11 SEP 1783.[1] The legal descrip- tion notes this is the same land patented by Robert ADAMS 11 APR 1732; thus it also proves this is the very same Achilles MOORMAN who married Robert's daughter Elizabeth. We don't know when the Moormans moved to Bedford Co.; deeds only tell us they left after August 1765 and arrived before September 1783. I SUSPECT Bedford records will show they arrived early-to- mid 1770s; however I was unsuccessful this summer in getting records directly from the Court House and the "on-site" researcher I contacted hasn't come through with his promises. The last abstract of Bedford deeds published so far stops JAN 1771. [2] We do know at least one "probable" son was there before March 1777, the date Silas' will was probated [3] and Matthew Al- legree before 1778 (documented below). Published Quaker records are no help either for "Achilles Moorman" does not appear in South River MM records [4] and there are too many "Elizabeth Moorman" entries to sort between. Records do show they were in Bedford County before 1781 for Achilles petitioned for payment of various Rev. War claims that year.[5] I should point out here there MIGHT BE two Achilles Moor- mans in the area: this one who died 1785 and his nephew, son of Thomas Moorman. A Campbell Co. deed says "an" Achilles Moorman was "of Caroline County" when he purchased land on Lick Creek in 1782. IF this is Thomas and Rachel's son, then all these RW claims were presented by Achilles d.1785. I BELIEVE these are the only Achilles Moormans in VA in this timeframe, but prefer hedging until we know whether Charles "Sr." and Mary (Adams) had a son Achilles who died before Charles wrote his will. The following names of interest are found in the "Return of Provisions collected 1781" by Christopher Irvine [6]: Achilas MOREMAN 3 diets, 1 peck corn ... Achalas MOREMAN 10 barels corn ...Micajah MOREMAN...Achalas MOREMAN 1 diet, 1/2 peck corn, Andrew MOREMAN 1 beef...Micajah MOREMAN...Achilas MOOREMAN 8 diets, 7 pecks corn... William MOREMAN...Matthew ALLEGAR...Andrew MOREMAN. As discussed in (ANDREW.txt), there were two Andrews in Bedford in this timeframe: sons of Thomas and Achilles. The above "Micajah" is son of Thomas and "William" is son of Achilles d.1785. Campbell County VA was created from the eastern part of Bedford County in 1781. It takes time for county governments to get "up and running". Christopher Irvine is again the person collecting claims March 1782, but this time for Campbell County. [7] The creation of a new county in the midst of collecting and paying RW claims probably explains the appearance of same names in two counties: Achilles Mooreman for 275# beef, 10 barrel, 3 bu 3 pecks corn, 27 diets for ditto; William Mooreman for 275# beef, 6 diets, 1 bu corn for sd. com; Andrew Moormen for 250# beef, 2 diets, 1 peck corn for ditto; Zachariah Mooreman for 625# beef, 8 diets, 2 pecks corn for ditto; Andrew Moarman fur. sd Com with 36 days pas- turage, 10 diets, 5 pecks corn, 412 bundles fodder, Zachariah Moarman furn Augusta Militia on march to North Carolina with 2 bu corn, 12 sheaves oats, 6 diets, 38# hay; Archelles Moarman for diets and forage March 1781 L31.12 furn Jno Ward. The "late" Sheriff of Bedford Co. declared before the 1782 DEC Campbell Co. Court that he had collected taxes from certain inhabitants, in cluding Andrew and Charles Mooreman. Again, "William" is son of Achilles; "Zachariah" is son of Thomas; "Andrew and Charles" are up for grabs as both brothers had sons Andrew and Charles. Achilles' purchase deed for 3,030 acres March 4, 1782 is the very first deed filed in the new Campbell Co. Deeds Book.[8] He and his eldest son Charles purchased this large tract on both sides of Seneca Creek from the executors of the estate James Murray. It was the entire 1765 patent to said Murray taking out 200 acres "conveyed this day" to Andrew Mooreman, son of said Achilles. I highly SUSPECT they had lived on this tract for years; the death of James Murray required legalizing the verbal contract. The last entry in Campbell County records for Achilles d. 1785 is dated within days of his death "suggesting" he had enough warning of his impending death to make final arrangements. This deed [9] provides the preferred date of his death ("after 20 NOV 1785") since the very specific 26 NOV 1785 is not documented. Achilles and "son" Charles sell to Mathew ALLEGREE for L50 602 acres on Seneca Creek, part of the Murray tract. The deed is witnessed by "son" Jesse Moorman and ALLEGRE son-in-law, Charles Burris; the third witness, James Carver, and his possible relationship to these people follows. Achilles' will was probated at the DEC 1785 Campbell County Court. I refer you to ACHLSWLL.asc, my transcrip- tion of his will and inventory. Children Achilles' will is frustrating because it identifies only four sons; although Mary Allegree receives money, he doesn't identify her specifically as a daughter. Other names are widely circu- lated and biology would dictate more children; however, four sons -- Charles, Andrew, William and Jesse -- are the only PROVEN children of this couple. I will attempt a "preponderance of evidence" case for the above Mary Allegree and Silas d. 1777. The others are more problematic. Each mini-biography is neces- sarily brief to remain within the limits set by some mail providers; again, I invite descendants to send more detailed reports to share with the group. This is especially true in the case of the two Charles MOORMANs with wives "Mary". One is the following son of Achilles d.1785; the other is Achilles' brother, Charles "Sr". CHARLES is accepted as the eldest son; his birthdate is given as "c1737" based on "c1736" marriage of parents. He married Mary VENABLE, daughter of Abraham before (Quaker dates) 1764, 9, 8 for was dismissed by Cedar Creek MM because they were married by a "hireling priest". [10] That her father is Abraham VENABLE is proven by 11 APR 1768 Louisa Co. deed for "one negroe Boy Baptized by the name of Joe but commonly called Dick and one Negro Girl named Sall." [11] Within the deed Abraham refers to her as "daughter Mary, wife of Charles Morman Jr." This Charles is "said to be" a Major in the RW, but I will leave it to a descendant to sort between the various Charles Moormans for proof. Charles died before 11 JUN 1798 in Campbell County VA, the date his will (dated 13 APR 1798) was probated. [12] I offer the following as proof this Charles is both son of Achilles d.1785 and husband of Mary VENABLE: two slaves named "Dick" plus one named "Squire" (given him by will of father Achilles) appear in the inventory of his estate. Like his father, CHARLES d.1798 names only five sons in his will: John, William, James, Achilles and Abraham. He does say John, William and James are the oldest when he appoints them ex- ecutors along with his wife. John and William refused to serve; Mary's securities for her administration bond were: Thomas Clark (possibly Thomas M., son-in-law of the deceased Charles' brother Andrew), Robert Clark (probably son of Micajah Sr., but possibly a grandson of Micajah Sr.), John Moorman, William N. Moorman and James Moorman Jr. "Son" James wasn't in court that day so this "Jr" is another; note the "N" with William Moorman. I would AS SUME John and William were her sons, but did her son William use the "N" in his name? ANDREW is "thought to be" the third son. (The in-between brother is in the "preponderance of evidence" section below.) Andrew's specific birthdate of 2 DEC 1744 is not documented; it also is "assigned" to a first cousin which makes it even more suspect. Andrew married Judith CLARK, daughter of Micajah Sr. and (his aunt) Judith (ADAMS). Andrew died spring 1791; the specific 10 MAR 1791 deathdate is not documented. For more infor- mation see ANDREW.txt. [One descendant (Mrs. Isabel M. McDaniel) found enough dis- crepancies on son WILLIAM, she submitted an article to the Na- tional Genealogical Society Quarterly. [13] Although her article isn't documented within the text, she assures readers she sub- mitted 20 pages of information to verify these facts. I leave it to direct descendants to learn who is correct.] WILLIAM was born c1751 in Louisa or Albemarle County. He died 25 JAN 1829, age 78 years, at Planters Hall, Breckinridge County, KY. He is buried at his residence located about 8 miles south of Hardinsburg, the county seat for Breckinridge. William was married three times and had children with his first two wives. All children were born in VA with possible exception of the last two; their birthplace depends on when the family ac- tually left VA. William's first wife was Jane (Jeane) HADEN (Hayden); they had six children. He married secondly Judith (Juda) VENABLE (daughter of Hugh Lewis Venable and Mary MARTIN) 21 AUG 1789. They also had six children. William married his third wife in KY: Mrs. Elizabeth (Harwood / Haden / Howard) Miller 5 JUL 1818. Children by Jane Haden are: (1) James Haden b. 27 FEB 1776 d. 10 AUG 1852 Breckinridge m. Elizabeth MOORMAN, dau of his Uncle Andrew (d.1791 Campbell Co.) and 2nd 10 JUN 1810 Nancy Ann OWEN; (2) William b. c1778 m. 4 AUG 1806 Patsy (Martha) MOORMAN, dau of Uncle Andrew (d.1791); John H. m. 30 DEC 1802 Ann ROBINSON; (4) Mary "Polly" m. 21 OCT 1790 James EIDSON; (5) Mildred m. 1 APR 1805 James QUISENBERRY; (6) Elizabeth m. 24 FEB 1814 Capt. Jack (John) WEBB. William's children with second wife Judith VENABLE: (7) Hugh Lewis b. c1793 m. 27 OCT 1814 Harriet OWEN, dau of Thomas Owen; (8) Virginia Jane m. Grant OWEN Sr., son of Thomas; (9) Nancy Ann b. 23 APR 1795 d. 2 JUL 1838 m. c1824 Alfred OWEN, son of Thomas; (10) Lucretia Venable m. 22 JUL 1824 Capt. Grant OWEN Jr., nephew of Grant Sr. and son of Thomas Jr.; (11) Jesse V. b. 1807 m. 1 JAN 1829 Rebecah JACKSON; (12) Charles d. age 12 years. JESSE is the youngest son of Achilles for is the only son not appointed co-executor of the will. He is also to receive the "home" plantation after his mother's death which is another in dication of younger son. I have the very specific, but uncited, 15 DEC 1762 for his birth [14] and 9 JUL 1843 deathdate. He married Elizabeth Buckner STITH 14 FEB 1785. [15] That his wife was "an" Elizabeth is proven [16] by deed when they sold land on Troublesome Creek in Campbell Co. Children based on Preponderance of Evidence SILAS died before 24 MAR 1777 Bedford Co. VA,[17] the date his 2 NOV 1776 will was recorded. Tillman gives his birthyear as 1739, but none of the other genealogies offer a birthyear. Mrs. Eldridge is quoted [18] for his marriage to Sallie MOON, daughter of Gilbert, but descendant of Sallie and Michael Gilbert, Carla H. Ratcliff, reports Sallie is the daughter of Jacob Moon who died in Greene Co., Georgia. Silas Moorman's will identifies "Sally" as his wife and names children Jacob, Pleasant and Martha. "Brother" Charles Moorman and "probable brothers-in-law" Andrew and Jacob Moon Jr. are appointed executors. The widow Sally (Moon) Moorman married Michael GILBERT 2 FEB 1779 in Bedford Co. [19] Michael died in Hancock Co. Georgia. I offer three court records as proof SILAS is son of Achilles. First he is not named son of Thomas and Rachel (Clark) per Thomas' will. [20] However (2) he is one of the appraisers of the estate of Thomas and Rachel's son, Pleasant.[21] IF Silas were Pleasant's brother, he was too closely kin to be eligible to appraise the estate. This rules him out as son of Thomas and Rachel. And (3) in Campbell Co. 4 NOV 1783 Charles MOORMAN deeded 100 acres to Jacob MOORMAN, identified as son of SILAS.[22] This land was part of the large 3,000 plus acre tract Charles and Achilles purchased and sold to family members only, at least in these early years. So, I believe these three records taken together provide proof enough for Silas as son. MARY ALLEGREE was given thirty pounds per Achilles' will, but her relationship to him is not stated. She married Matthew Allegre c1758 in "probably" Albemarle County VA where Matthew lived with his father Giles. Giles Allegre is an interesting per- son in his own right; he resided in Manakintown from 1727-1734, lived elsewhere in Goochland and/or Hanover Counties for a few years, and was probably living on Mychunk Creek by 1740. An interesting side-note is that Giles purchased land from George and Mary EASTHAM in Goochland Co. 16 NOV 1731. [23] The EASTHAM surname should sound familiar to long-time members of this group. We encountered them a year ago in discussion of whether "a" George and Mary EASTHAM are direct or only collateral in the an- cestry of Gen. George Rogers Clark (GENGEOR.txt). Several of us BELIEVE, but haven't PROVED, this is the same couple. Giles built a tavern which still stands in that part of Albemarle County which became the northern tip of Fluvanna County, near the Louisa County border. Near neighbors included Achilles Moor- man and Micajah Clark Sr. on Mychunk Creek. Also patenting nearby land is a Charles Clark, whose land "near" the Manakintown tract was adjacent that owned by Giles Allegree. We are uncertain if they lived there at the same time. This Charles is just another coincidence to add to our pile of intriguing connections. Achilles' last court related act was to "officially" deed 602 acres to Matthew Allegree 20 NOV 1785 [24] from his large tract. Fredericksville Parish records (Louisa / Albemarle Co.) show Matthew Allegree living near Achilles. Many ALLEGREEs stayed in Albemarle Co., but Matthew was in Bedford and Campbell Co. with the MOORMANs before 1778, the date he sold his Albemarle Co. land to John Clark, son of Micajah Sr. The deed indicates that William MOORMAN "now lives" on this property. [25] In 1781 Jesse Moorman signed the surety bond for Mary Allegree's marriage to James Alverson; Matthew gave consent as father.[26] Bondsmen usually were "near family" members. I believe there is enough evidence to list Mary as daughter of Achilles and Elizabeth. Unproven Children The list of unproven children and sources which include them is long; ALL children do not appear in any one source. To save space I won't cite the source where each name is found. Although some of these MAY BELONG to the above family grouping, they all need more research before doing so: Micajah Clark, James, Thomas, Judith m. William M. HADEN, Elizabeth, John Lynch and Robert. Of these, "most sources" agree JAMES died young; I have no qualms about including him in the list since the period and "suggested" birthyears certainly allow room for some children who died young. THOMAS is given a birthdate of 22 JAN 1757 [27] which is remarkably close to the birthdate for Thomas, son of Charles and Mary (ADAMS). Thomas as a son of Achilles d.1785 appears in only one source; I think it's safe to mark him off the list. ROBERT and MICAJAH appear more often than Thomas, but usually one or the other, not both on one list. It makes perfect sense for Achilles and Elizabeth to name a child after his maternal grandfather; however neither Achilles nor Elizabeth have a direct CLARK connection in their background "that we have proven". On the other hand, Micajah Clark Sr. may have been a dear friend they wanted to honor. My OPINION for what it's worth, is that ROBERT "might belong" on the list, but I'm hesitant to add MICAJAH. I would append "probably died young" until we find specific documentation for either. JOHN LYNCH and ELIZABETH are given by Tillman only; there's even less reason for them to name a child "John Lynch" than "Micajah Clark"; therefore I drop him completely from the list. They cer- tainly could have had a daughter named ELIZABETH; again, I would append "probably died young" if she's added at all. That brings us to JUDITH who is reported to have married William M. HADEN. She and their marriage appear in "most" CLARK / MOOR- MAN genealogies. However HADEN researcher Molly Shumate has not located "a" William or William M. married to "a" Judith anywhere in HADEN records. Looking through various court, parish and cen- sus records, I find no references to Achilles Moorman AND William Haden doing the same kind of things together -- living near each other, petitioning for RW reimbursements -- as we do with Achilles and Matthew Allegree. Therefore, I decline to list "Judith who m. William Haden" among the proven children. However, there is another possibility which needs to be ad- dressed. Marcia Bignall wonders if "Judith", wife of James Car- ver, is a MOORMAN instead of ALLEGREE as she first thought? This Judith, born 18 OCT 1756, is a bit too old to be Matthew and Mary ALLEGREE's daughter. To "fit" her into that particular family grouping, Matthew was only 19 when they married and she was the eldest child. This IS possible; but with a birth in 1756, she could also be a younger/youngest child of Achilles Moorman. James Carver, Charles Burris and Jesse MOORMAN witnessed the deed whereby Achilles deeded land to Matthew Allegree in 1785. Charles Burris is Matthew's son-in-law; James Carver and his family are very closely allied with the ALLEGREEs and BURRISes in both VA and KY. Certainly a "preponderance of evidence" case can be made for Judith as an ALLEGREE. But curiously, when Matthew sold the tract deeded him by Achilles, he had almost 100 more acres than when he started, and the sale was from he AND James Carver together. So far we've found no deeds MOORMAN to James Carver or even Matthew Allegree to James Carver. Marcia wonders "how" and "why" James had an interest in this land. Could he have acquired 100 acres as the son-in-law / brother-in-law of Achilles and Charles who originally purchased it from the patentee? Therefore we raise the specific question: could the daughter JUDITH (widely reported as child of Achilles and Elizabeth) have married James Carver INSTEAD of William Haden? Obviously more work is needed here. Endnotes 1 page 52, Albemarle Co. Deed Book 9, from microfilmed copy in hands of Linda Sparks Starr. 2 _Bedford Co. VA Deed Book C-3_ abstracted by Ann Chilton.
