Some words are indistinct--many are legal terms, but the most important ones--giving specific names for physical features which could be located on a map--are the most questionable! I've inserted a (?) and given my best guess beside some, used a (______) on others; I welcome any and all suggestions/corrections.] THIS INDENTURE made this 27th Day of March one thousand seven hundred and seventy Between Richard Stith for and in Behalf of the Est of Richard Randolph gent of Henrico County Deceased of the one part and James Crawford and Samuel Crawford, sons of Wil- liam Crawford Dec'd of the other part Witnefseth that the said Richard Stith for and In consideration of the full sum of Twelve pounds seven shillings and six pence Current money of Virginia to him in hand paid the Receipt whereof the __?___ hereby acknow- ledge hath granted Bargained and sold and by these presents Doth grant Bargain Sell Deliver and confirm unto them the said James Crawford and Samuel Crawford their Heirs and afsigns forever one certain tract or parcel of Land Containing two Hundred and twelve acres be the same more or Lefs on both sides of H________ [possibly Hayes] forks of goose Creek [abstracted as such by Chil- ton] at the head thereof S_______ Bedford County and Bounded as followeth Viz Beginning at Mcfaule corner pointer in the patent line thence by the line of the patent N 15 E 132 poles to a popler N 46 W 91 poles to a white oak, W 100 poles to an oak on a branch S 25 W 29 poles to a maple and _____ S 190 poles to the Mcfaule Corner joining thence along the ?fasers Line to the same being a Dividing Line S 80 E crofsing the ? Teste Ben Howard C B C Truly Recorded Ben Howard That this is the Samuel Crawford who married Jennet Mason is "proven" by the following preponderance of evidence: Goose Creek is an earlier name for Roanoke River proven by land grants for John Mason on Goose Creek as well as maps appearing in Kegley's VA Frontier which shows both names for the same river. James and Samuel Crawford first appear in Botetourt Co. records in this timeframe. That other Botetourt Co. residents appear in Bedford Co. records "proven" by Bedford Co. Deed Book B-2, page 33 as abstracted by Ann Chilton: James McFall witness with An Bledsoe, Fran Thorpe, John Mills, Thos Barnes, Francis Smith to several deeds for lots in New London Town from Alexander Sayers of Augusta Co. to Israel Christian 26 JUL 1764. That these are Botetourt residents/neighbors "proven" by: Roanoke 1740-1782 by Clare White, page 16: "Israel Christian, a former justice of Augusta County ... bought the Stone House from Patterson in 1760 ..." Samuel Crawford was taxed at "Stone House at Cloverdale to South Roanoke River" in 1772 and 1775 per Burton's Botetourt County VA: It's Men 1770-1777. Also John Mills Jr. was security for the Botetourt Co. Marriage Bond of Samuel Crawford to Jane Mason 23 MAR 1771 and William Boyd, co executor of the 1761 will of John Mason, was from Bedford Co. That John McFawle was a resident of Augusta County--thus could be a neighbor-- "proven" by Chalkley, vol I Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish ...: [Botetourt formed from Augusta Co. 1769] page 150, "24 MAY 1768 John McFawle -- no inhabitant" p456 "Boyd vs John McFawl Jr Sundries 1766, Mar 17; 4 APR, 8 JUN.
