He received 155 acres (the home place) per his father's will. He appears on the 1772 and 1775 tax list for Botetourt Co. VA with brothers James and William. [1] (Botetourt was created from a portion of Augusta County late 1769.) In 1783 he was taxed on one horse and 1 cow in Capt. He received 800 or 900 acres in Botetourt Co. and 1400 acres in then Franklin Co. VA per his brother James's 1803 will (probated 1808). [3] He and Jane probably traveled to Kentucky with the Samuel Crawfords, Edward Pates and others. It was as resident of Breckinridge County that the then 75 year old Joseph applied for RW pension in 1832. [4] According to the notes from this pension file, he was a Sgt in the company commanded by Capt. William McClanahan of the Rgmt commanded by Col. Christian in Reg. He served from ?? and discharged about Christmas at Long Island of Holston. This tour was about 4 months. (2) In 1780 he substituted for his brother William Mason on a tour against the [?Scruno] Indians under the Command of Capt. Jos. Bennett and Col. Campbell on the Tennessee. He served this time about six weeks or two months and about the first of Feb. 1781 he volunteered in Botet. Co. Va under James Neely, marched into No. Car. and was there attached to Col. Campbell's Rgmt. "We had two scrimages with the British before we reached the place where the battle of Guilford was. I was not in the engagement but was out with the waggon yard. The British then went toward the seaboard and we were discharged and returned home." And about the last of March he rec'd no written discharge for any of these tours on the last tour he acted as sergeant. (3) About the 1st of June 1781 he was again called out from the same county in Capt. Jos. Luney's Co. He was not drafted but volunteered under a call that was made by the state for a large number of men. He marched to Albemarle Court House, VA and joined the Regiment. "Gen. Lafayette was the Chief Commander whom I frequently saw. We were in two scrimages, one at Hot Water and the other at James Town against the British under Corn Wallace. We were kept in service in that section of county until the 10th day of Aug. 1781 when we were discharged in the ?permotly."
